Today I witnessed an act of kindness that reminded me of the importance of "not sweating the small stuff." This act occurred when I was sitting beside three squawking teenage girls, and becoming a touch annoyed by their noise. Just as I was about to get really irritated, I noticed the cashier at the doughnut shop I was sitting in, gently assist a blind customer who was ordering an iced coffee. She helped him with his money, guided him to his seat, and even added the cream to his coffee. Smiling the entire time and paying careful attention to his needs, this lovely girl reminded me, once again, of how beautiful the human spirit really is.
This man, who is blind and relies entirely on the kindness of strangers to help him through his day, was treated with all the dignity and respect he deserved – no condescension, no pity - just compassion and care.
I then wondered, if I was blind, would I attract the right people to help me cross the street, go shopping, or simply buy a coffee?
I hope so, but more importantly, I hope that the unsung heros of our community – the ordinary people who help other ordinary people, without praise or recognition - continue to make our lives, extraordinary.
