Americans sit around wondering why they have the highest per-capita murder rate in what we euphemistically call the "First World" and this gives rise to the question: "Just what is the average intelligence of a person living in the good ol' U.S. of A.?"
Why? I'll tell ya why!
First the situation and then some facts.
A powerful pro-gun lobby group in the United States has filed legal challenges to handgun bans in San Francisco and Chicago.
The lawsuits come a day after the US Supreme Court ruled that a ban on the private possession of handguns in Washington DC was unconstitutional.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) says it wants similar bans in other states and cities overturned as well.
SELECTED WORST CITIES FOR MURDER (LATE-1990s)
(Developed World)
(1) Washington, D.C., USA 69.3
(2) Philadelphia, USA 27.4
(3) Dallas, USA 24.8
(4) Los Angeles, USA 22.8
(5) Chicago, USA 20.5
(6) Phoenix, USA 19.1
(7) Moscow, Russia 18.1
(8) Houston, USA 18.0
(9) New York City, USA 16.8
(10) San Diego, USA 12.5
Now, feast your eyes on this bunky! Nobody in Europe! Nobody in Japan! Nobody in Canada or Australia! Except for Moscow, it's all The States and the reason is HAND GUNS!
(Maybe if Charlton Heston had been gunned down instead of John Lennon the N.R.A. would have a different attitude!)
San Francisco's mayor says he plans to fight the NRA challenge.
The NRA lawsuit in San Francisco challenges the city's handgun ban in public housing; while in Chicago it challenges a ruling that makes it illegal to possess or sell handguns in the city.
"In Washington DC, or in any state, whether you live in the housing projects or a high end suburb, you have the right to defend yourself and your family at home," said Chris Cox, from the NRA.
"These laws all deny that right."
The NRA is joined in the San Francisco suit by a gay man living in a government-owned housing development who says he needs a gun to protect himself from potential hate crimes.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city would "vigorously fight the NRA" and said the ban was good for public safety.
"Is there anyone out there who really believes that we need more guns in public housing? I can't for the life of me sit back and roll over on this. We will absolutely defend the rights of the housing authority," Mr Newsom said.
The Supreme Court's ruling says that the constitution "protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defence within the home".
Now this is where I have to jump in with a bit of editorialising.
Even though I am against sport hunting I am willing to give a hunter the right to go out and slaughter animals for their pleasure because after all, this is a democracy.
But! The only purpose for a handgun is to hunt people, and if no one had one, then we wouldn't have this problem now would we?!
Don't forget boys and girls, there will come a day in the not too distant future where government world-wide will ban the manufacture and possession of handguns because the only reason for them IS to kill other humans.
And please, you assholes, don't give me that crap about how banning handguns is the first step in a government plan to control the population. They don't need to ban handguns to do that. They do that quite nicely already!

Probably on par with most developed nations, and it should be noted that we are the world super power, but I don't see what that has to do with holding up our Second Amendment.
There are now, and would always be far fewer murders with knives, hammers or axes than with those handy little handguns with their matching bullets.
The latter part of your comment makes perfect sense, but by my original hypothesis still stands.
Now just where the heck am I going to get rid of this plumed hat, sword and shoulder epaulets?
Actually, Webster's does not define it that way at all.
"Main Entry: mi·li·tia
Pronunciation: \m-li-sh\
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, military service, from milit-, miles
Date: 1625
1 a: a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency b: a body of citizens organized for military service
2: the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military "
"But I believe that one of the reasons that this was put into the Constitution was that we didn't want a country in which the people could lose control and not be able to fight to take the country back to the people. "
First of all, the second amendment is a disaster of vague references. It is, without question, the most poorly worded section of the constitution, which is precisely why it's been so hotly debated for decades.
One has to visit the framing of the amendment around the period in which it was written, and the mindset of those who penned it.
The founders were staunchly opposed to a standing army. They intentionally did not create a constitutional framework for such an institution because of this opposition. Instead, they preferred that there be an organized, well-trained, regulated militia that could be called upon in times of national emergency.
THAT is what the 2nd amendment refers to. The founders wanted every citizen of reasonable health and age to be able to be part of this militia, if they so desired, which is why they wanted citizens to have the right to bear arms.
I can't see the second amendment ever being repealed, personally. Thankfully, the founders saw fit to allow firearms to be regulated.
Oh, does your cape need ironing? It got quite a bit wrinkled last night, you devil!
Be not fooled. Lois Lane is a new moniker that the pathetic Bill B. created in order to launch a 24/7 stalking and harassing campaign against me. I am in the process of having both accounts revoked for egregious TOS violations.
"The constitution is based on two hundred year old dated ideals the same as the bible is based on two thousand year old thoughts. Both need re-vamping. "
The bible has been revamped from the very first time it was mistranslated from ancient Hebrew text.
As for the constitution, I'd like to see that second amendment cleared up. It's rather absurd to assume that the intent was to allow every single weapon ever manufactured throughout the ages to be legally available to any chucklehead with cash in hand.
= Probably correct. By the time the Redcoats arrived at Lexington, the colonial militia had given back the cannon, the powder, the muskets and the grapeshot assigned them by the British. It wasn't until (exceeding his orders) a young British officer rode forward and said "Lay down your arms and disperse," that the fight began. Those were personal firearms the men lined up with on the village green. And I sincerely doubt they let the village idiot line up with them.
