Why I don't put my creative work up at Gather...

This is an open access Googleable site(despite having to have a password to get all the way in) and once your work is Googleable, it's  considered published. No longer exclusive. No editor will take it. Remember that if you want to publish it later. Use a real closed workshop like Zoetrope or a hundred others.

Wilma, many editors buy reprint rights. Plus, a moderate rewrite would make it a new article. (one editor told me 25% different is all he needs)
I'm sorry not to see more of your writing here. Maybe you could "retire" articles to gather after some other website has paid you for first rights?

I don't write very much nonfiction--wish I did--it'd be a lot more lucrative. I do post book reviews(sometimes) but things are much stricter with poetry and fiction.

Also, I believe excerpts of work do not count as previously published.

I don't care who sees this stuff that I put on here. My books are another type of writing - anyway, lots of folks have found me through my Gather articles. What websites pay for articles? I sure would like to know - maybe I'll get on the ball? Yall fill me in - I'm slow! Richard thanks for info. Salud.

I've been paid for poetry by flashquake and The Christian Science Monitor. These same places pay for nonfiction too. I haven't researched web venues for nonfiction, but if you can get paid for poetry, I KNOW you can get paid for nonfiction.

You are correct. Gather is not a safe writers haven, in my opinion. just a place to talk and play, for the most part.
I must say Wilma, your icon is a creative piece!

Thanks for letting me join this creative group. One answer for getting published for writing on the web is a place called Suite101. I just joined it. I hope to be able to do some linking back to here as well.

I'm still trying to figure out how to use gather so any tips would be most helpful.

True Priscilla. But if an editor has a choice between a fresh piece and one that's been on the net, he/she will choose the fresh one. And believe me, they will Google before they accept a piece, so if you try to pass off something from the net as something new, chances are they will find out and you'll be blackballed. It's ugly and cutthroat.
