I'm watching The Ed Show on MSNBC and am listening to him talk about No Child Left Behind and education in America. Seventy-five percent of Detroit high school students dropout. Three out of four students don't graduate. This statistic made my mouth drop open. This is disturbing. If children are not even managing to receive a high school diploma, how can we expect the future of our economy to improve?
I'm one for reading reports to see how researchers came up with the statistic. The percentage came from America's Promise but I have not checked the research. I'm actually going to go now and see if I can find the report. I just have to say that there are many problems with our education system and am watching closely to see what the Obama Administration does with our education system. Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education, is discussing the issue now on the show. This guy has a lot on his plate and I hope he can find solutions quickly because the youth of our country is suffering.

The massive outsourcing that went on in the first half of this decade is really roaring now.
The "local" public schools refused to help him with his math, dropped foreign languages in the elementary schools, and built entire new wings on each school for classrooms they already had.
His school has Latin class using Rosetta Stone and laptop computers, they have free tutoring and before and after care (up to 350 hours), the teachers and staff have to PROVE that they deserve to work their every year.
I'm glad you're son has a good school. I just think more should be done with the public schools. If the public schools are so bad, officials should be doing more to improve the situation. I just get sick to my stomach when the only answer that some can come up with is charter schools. I think more emphasis needs to be on improving on public schools.
It's a sad situation. A person needs HS now but that's just the minimum, after that a kid needs college or a couple of years of vocational training beyond HS.
I live in SE Michigan, in the suburbs, almost the country, and our "local" school system SUCKS. That's why my son got transfered to the Charter school.
He's always been an excellent student, but had a problem with math. Well, this year he's been on the honor roll and gotten a Young Edison Award in science EVERY marking period. He used to have HOURS of homework. I kept wondering what they were doing in school, because it seemed like I was the one doing the teaching. NOW, he has one or two pages a night.
