Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun), founded in 1984, and based in Montreal provides some of the most unique shows available on the stage (and in the tent) today. Each show has its own theme and melds circus styles from around the world. They boast a continuous performance with live music where the troop changes props as part of the show. In the Denver area (local to me), its shows have been sold out weeks in advance, its current Las Vegas show is said to be presenting toover 9000 people per night.
Now, two Dubai companies, Istithmar World (the investment arm of Dubai World) and real estate developer Nakheel have each purchased a 10 percent share. Guy Laliberte retains operational and creative control of the circus troupe. Nakheel and Cirque du Soleil will jointly design and build a 1,800-seat theatre on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah island to stage the first Cirque resident show outside of the United States and the Far East.
Considered by some to be the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the Palm Jumeirah was created by dredging sand from the Persian Gulf sea bed to provide luxury homes for over 8000 occupants, each assured of direct access to the sea. One of seven of the Arab Emirates, Dubai, has fast evolved from a petrol state to a real estate and financial capital of the Middle East boasting the biggest, tallest, largest and most playful of many buildings. Entertainment opportunities abound, and the Cirque theatre will be an interesting addition for the growing tourism industry.
