Your morning coffee - economic stimulus - how to have Coffee ALMOST as great as Starbucks for pennies

August 27, 2009 08:01 AM EDT

I just saved 40 bucks by buying enough coffee to last until about February. My favorite brand is on sale until September 10. It is a house brand, actually, from Supervalue, but a gourmet house brand.

I actually love gourmet food, and am quite fussy about what I eat. So, since I don't want to spend megabucks in expensive restaurants, I will make stuff myself.

You can have delicious coffee, for very little money.

Here are a few flavors to whet your morning:

Buy top quality coffee. These days, it is not difficult to find good quality coffee at the store, in several price points. If you prefer 'American' flavor or "Breakfast Blend", that is fine, too. There is a place for everything.

I love: French Roast, Espresso, Hazelnut, Caramel Spice, Double Chocolate, Java, Ethiopian, Columbian, Pumpkin Spice, French Vanilla and French Vanilla Nut.

You can add whipped cream, and presto - you just saved a ton by not going to Starbucks.

I bought 20 pounds, sitting in my freezer.

Here are some deliciosities:

1: Mocha to die for: Make Double Chocolate - this is a flavor from Java Delight - from the Supervalue family of stores. I make a pot, then let it cool for Iced Coffee. The chocolate flavor is subtle, but I make a great mocha by adding a quality chocolate syrup in the glass with ice. I never use sugar, per se, but I do add Evaporated Milk. Sometimes, I use half and half or light cream. I do try to avoid drinking calorie and fat laden coffees, because I drink a ton of coffee.

2: Caramel/Butterscotch - Use a French Roast, a Breakfast Blend, a Caramel coffee - whatever base flavor you wish to start with. For iced coffee, let the coffee cool somewhat and put your ice in. Smuckers has a great Caramel and Butterscotch toppings that are on sale for a bit. I bought two, and will buy one more to last me until next summer, when they will be available again. Spoon two spoonfuls of Caramel or Butterscotch into your glass/cup. Again, I use evaporated milk. Very tasty and low calorie. The Caramel Smuckers I use is sugar free, but it is 90 calories a serving.

3: Peppermint  and Chocolate Peppermint - a peppermint stick in the hot coffee will be very tasty. Until they come up with a peppermint liquid, I use a stick. Candy Canes are best bought, yeah Christmas time. Peppermint Starlights also work but are pretty bulky, but if you don't mind candy bits in the bottom, they are yummy. If you are lactose negative, Peppermint Starlights contain added lactose.  Peppermint and chocolate syrup, whipped cream, light cream, half and half or evaporated milk added to a French Roast base!

4: Pumpkin Spice - sometimes, I can find a pumpkin spice blend. But if not, in the Autumn, this is very tasty. Start with your fave base coffee flavor. To the grounds, add:

Some ground cinnamon, cloves and a dash of nutmeg.  You will likely want to add a bit more when the coffee has brewed, while it is still hot. For iced, add while hot, then add whatever condiment flavors you wish with it - cream, whipped cream, and so on.

5: Vanilla - Vanilla is a great flavoring with Hazelnut, and Vanilla Coffees, or non-flavored coffees.

6: Orange - I used real orange extract the other day for a pot of French Roast. I put some orange extract directly into the grounds, then added more into the pot, and one more dose into the hot cup. Orange extract is 79 percent alcohol, so beware.

7: Speaking of alcohol, Raspberry Chambord, a liquor, would also be terrific. You can add just a dab for some flavor, or, in the winter months, a shot of Raspberry Chambord into the hot pot and some additional liquor into your hot or iced cup, with cream, whipped cream or evaporated milk, is a great way to beat the chill.

8: Irish Coffee, Scotch Coffee, Cognac, and Bourbon Coffee: Either real Irish whiskey, a partial shot - unless you are brave and go the full monty for an entire shot of Irish in your hot or iced cup - base flavor your choice,  - or you can add Bailey's Irish Creme. Scotch, Brandy/Cognac, and Bourbon are also great choices. I do like an occasional whisky jazzed coffee, but wow, it will make you sleepy! But what a way to become sleepy!

9: Cider Cafe - I am wondering about a small amount of unfiltered cider into the pot of hot coffee. Add a bit of cinnamon and cloves for added flavor.

10: Eggnog - either with booze or without booze. If you want a dash of coffee into your eggnog, pour a jigger of hot or cold coffee into a glass or mug of Egg Nog. I try not to have much Egg Nog, because even though it is super delicious, it is so fattening as to not be funny. Or, if you would like a dash of Egg Nog into your coffee, (the reverse proportions), use mostly coffee with a jigger of Egg Nog.

So there you have it. Bottoms up! Cheerz!

I am finishing my second 16-ounce iced Caramel sauce/caramel spice coffee with evaporated milk.

For mr irish coffee. I just had one after work at a lonely cafe at Ol' Post Office Street where two cylists were quarrelling and a tourist from Europe managed to get lost.

I am hooked on a mocha Valencia. For 16 ounces (Vente) of coffee, three ounces of a good bar mocha syrup in the bottom of a large cup. Add three ounces of Triple Sec Curacao (alcoholic). Blend together and add six ounces of espresso (I use a blend of Ethiopian and Kona which are smaller beans that have been French roasted and I grind it myself just prior to brewing).

Fill to within 1/2" of the brim with steamed milk at 145F. Top with whipped cream and shaved chocolate.

I like strong black COFFEE coffee. No flavors. A good coffee bean deserves to be enjoyed for it's own unique taste. Who would mix Courviosier with Coke?

Uumph..! What mouth-watering recipes with coffee! I am really feeling envious!

Oh, how I savor that rich aroma
Rising as the coffee begins to brew.
The water gurgles as it passes through,
Awakening me from a near coma.

You're killing me with those wonderful descriptions. I don't have anything right now! I buy peppermint extract and add that and some chocolate to my coffee.
I always buy the cheap coffee because it's cheap. Folgers, Maxwell House, store brand. But they always, always, always go bad before I empty them and when they go bad they taste awful- sort of like cigarettes. I've tried everything to keep it fresh but nothing works. I gave up and started buying flavored instant coffee which is alright but not as good as the real stuff.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 10:05am EDT
peppermint extract....in a store? I prefer stronger than those brands. FREEZER~

I don't buy Flavored, like American International - too sweet and too mild...
Alex In Wonderland Aug 27, 2009, 7:50pm EDT
Well, I looked at the bottle and it said MINT, not peppermint. Tastes the same. I got it at the local grocery store. I also add vanilla extract sometimes. And vanilla-mint...mmm!

Good morning Kathryn. I got hooked on Hazelnut, but Folgers is the only one that sells it, that I've found. The other version's of Hazelnut, I don't like. I've tried the Creme Brulee, and liked it. The syrup's don't seem to do the same flavor, unless you pour in more than 2 ounces.

Have a good one...
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 10:05am EDT

If you like anything resembling a Starbucks Frappaccino, the base mix can be made very easily. For two litres of mix, use 1 package of vanila pudding mix (NOT instant, the kind you need to cook). Add two cups powdered milk. Grind two tablespoons of vanilla beans. Add 4 tablespoons of powdered malt. This can be stored as a powder in Tupperware in the refrigerator for several months.

To use: add two litres of water to the mix. In an industrial strength blender, fill the container to 1/3 with shaved ice. Add 4-6 ounces of strong espresso and fill to 2/3 of the container with the mix and blend until smooth.

Other flavourings can be added (especially Kathryn's pumpkin spice in the fall, or bar mocha).

Now how to get that nice frothy milk for the homemade latte's?
That's what I buy when I go to any coffee place, but I am content at home to make my nice strong costa rican coffee & add flavored sugar/free creamer to it.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 10:04am EDT
frothy milk...i think the blender..........but i will look for a recipe. Certainly cappacuno machines, but .........there must be a way without them.....
Ali Hussein Lopez Aug 27, 2009, 10:14am EDT
Priscilla;

If there's one thing that you can find cheap nowadays, it's last decade cooking technology tools. Cappucino machines, bread makers, electric grills (george foreman), panini makers. Try your local thrift store, craigslist or garage sales.

Who would have thought you'd love coffee, Kathryn? :)

Your recipes look great. Have you ever tried the Torani flavoring syrups? They come in a ton of different flavors (including peppermint, pumpkin, and gingerbread). The web site lists all their flavors and where you can buy them.

http://www.torani.com/

You can even follow them on Twitter or Facebook.

You inspired me to go make myself a cup of coffee using Torani Sugar Free Caramel syrup.

Cheers!

On Cape Vincent, coffee was served every morning with a weird looking coke bottle on the table. I found out (by smell) it was a liquor - Baily's Irish Cream! Imagine!

I like my coffee flavored with . . . wait for it . . .
coffee. The only time I went to a Starbucks was when a California hotel I stayed in gave me a $10 gift card so I could get an early breakfast before a flight.
Glad you were able to save so much money though.

Doc said I can only have decaf for the rest of my life. So Folgers instant decaf in the microwave will do. However, that's almost like hot water.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 10:59am EDT
instant! sooooo many chemicals!

there are many coffees you can buy that are decaf and not instant!

instant is the only cof i cannot drink - stomach acid!!
Richard B. Aug 27, 2009, 12:34pm EDT
The others are too much trouble, and the instant is fine for one cup for me. I still have a 4 cup coffee drip maker that makes fine coffee but it's away on a bottom shelf somewhere forgotten now.

If it's almost as great as Starbucks, I'll pass -- since Starbucks coffee tastes like warm tiger urine.

It's not that Starbucks coffee is strong, it's that they let it sit too long and gets stale. Big difference between stale and strong.

II am a coffee freak and perhaps drink much too much. Friends know this and bring me bags and bags when they travel.

One of my favorite brews comes from Cafe’ Du Monde in New Orleans. It is a combination of chicory and French blends. Served very hot with hot milk it is outrageous, particularly if served with fluffy sugar covered beneighs.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 7:35pm EDT

Freezing keeps it fresh... I freeze even the unopened packages. Of course, I wouldn't freeze brewed...... I like tea, too - green and hot with lemon. Or, iced herbals with fruit and seltzer......but herbals are not actually tea....

A sliced up onion and a raw one
Draw one -
Waiter, waiter, percolator

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, a cup

Boston bean (soy beans)
Green bean (cabbage and greens)
Im not keen about a bean
Unless it is a chili chili bean (boy!)

I love java sweet and hot
Whoops mr. moto Im a coffee pot (yeah)
Shoot me the pot and Ill pour me a shot
A cup, a cup, a cup (yeah)

Slip me a slug of the wonderful mug
an Ill cut a rug just as snug in a jug
Drop a nickel in the pot joe
Takin it slow
Waiter, waiter, percolator

I love coffee, I love tea
I love the java jive and it loves me
Coffee and tea and the java and me
A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup, boy!

Brewing your own coffee and adapting it the way your suggestion is a great money saver. I love some of your ideas and never consider using evaporated milk instead of creamer. I spent way too much money on Dunkin Donuts because I can not make a decent cup of coffee. Many years ago my parents had a Mr. Coffee and I learned how to make coffee in it. There was a special scoop and you just added x scoops per pot. Now with so many different coffee makers and types of coffee I can never figure out the correct formula and my coffee is either strong enough to grow chest hair or basically resembles a cup of weak tea.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 7:31pm EDT
I don't like creamer because it is fake, and I try to avoid 99 percent of processed things, unless I am starving and go to the store, then all bets are off...

I have a Mr. Coffee from Targets with auto shut off and you can remove the cup etc...it was 24.95 I think in Feb. only one step from the 19.95 one... If you can afford one, they are great.

I just POUR IN TONS OF GROUNDS, I never measure......

Great idea K, I NEED coffee!! I have cut corners, including the coffee I buy, adding a flare of flavor is a nice touch!
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 7:29pm EDT
It really DOES make a huge diff~~~

Up here in Canada we have lots of Stabucks, but the big "coffee" brand is Tim Hortons. My husband will NEVER darken the door to a TH store: less because he doesn't like coffee than that he is disgusted by the LINES of people who wait for half an hour (long enough to brew 8 cups!) to spend several dollars on coffee. We have one near our house which is so inconveniently located that every time the line backs up there ends up being a traffic snarl out on the street. Sheesh!
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 7:29pm EDT
I have seen the Tim Hortons, but SRLSY, I prefer Cafe Depot in Montreal and also Second Cup.
Ali Hussein Lopez Aug 28, 2009, 8:37am EDT
Tim Horton's has just opened in NYC. It will be interesting to see how New Yorkers take to it. I hear they have great pastries.
Kathryn E. Aug 28, 2009, 8:57am EDT
that will be INTERESTING!

My husband only buys Folgers. He recently discovered their new Black Silk blend. It sounds kinky, but it's smooth and strong.

I'm super fussy about coffee and hate Starbucks. I have a Nespresso machine and like to make lattes, macciatos with the pods. Trader Joe's has some very good organic coffee cheap. My favorite but hard to get beans are from Finland (we Finns are the worldest largest consumers of coffee!)
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 9:23pm EDT
ooh that sounds so yummmy........

wow, I did not know that about Finland, and since hubby doesn't drink coffee -but returned recently from Lahti with a side to Talinn, he did not know that either. Photos well.....sometimes.....

I am craving a cup now! We get Safeway Columbian, the best of their cheap coffees, and enhance it with coffee from our Food Coop that we like. We were spending too much $$ on coffee.
Kathryn E. Aug 27, 2009, 9:23pm EDT
Safeway is a great store......

Thanks for the tips. Trader Joe's is not located everywhere. They have good prices for choice items and smaller quantities which appeals to me.
Kathryn E. Aug 28, 2009, 5:57am EDT
Good prices are great at Trader Joe's. I get my coffee at our local Supervalue, which is not located everywhere, but it bought the Albertson's family. But a lot of great coffees are on the market these days, compared with even 20 and even 10 years ago, when it was much more difficult to find great coffee, unless one spent a ton. We can thank Starbucks for increasing our appetite for great coffee, because now the stores carry a much wider variety.

I even bought coffee a few years ago for 2.99 from Colombia at our Pepperidge Farm Thrift Store. We only have two in my state, but one is near where I live, and a great place to buy Pepperidge Farm products at discount.

I guess I'm a light, generic coffee drinker compared to some of you. But I do occasionally like a splash of kaluah in a cup.

Those calorie-laden, deliouse coffee slurpees (granitas) work well too--as do coffee milkshakes.

Kathy, do you drink that much coffee in the summer while you complain of the heat? Sometimes cold caffeine is more comfortable.
Kathryn E. Aug 28, 2009, 5:52am EDT
I only drink iced coffee except in January, when I will probably only drink hot....And tons of ice water and iced citrus seltzer.........
Kathryn E. Aug 28, 2009, 7:20am EDT
kahlua...oh yummm... reminds me of the white russians I liked - black russians - kalhua and vodka were too strong, but add cream and it was a white russian, sometimes known as a brown cow, and I used to drink those in clubs.....
Anita D. Sep 2, 2009, 5:26pm EDT
I like a shot of brandy sometimes when I have coffee in the evening.

Great recipes Kathryn. They do make a peppermint extract. My daughter used it once to make some kind of Girl Scout cookie. I'm with you on having gourmet at home. My favorite coffee is one from Louisiana called Community Coffee. I also prefer the French Roast. I have been getting some of Trader Joe's coffees lately. I never liked Starbucks coffee as I think it has a skunky taste. One must give Kudos to their marketing though. I detest Dunkin Donuts. I think it taste like stinky feet. Often, while up in near Beth Israel in Boston, I can find nothing but a Dunkin and I'll have to get one (if I'm desperate for a coffee.) Dunkin Donuts also has put a great deal into marketing, as well as, having one on every corner.
That's a pretty cup of coffee you posted. Did you make that?
Kathryn E. Aug 28, 2009, 7:15am EDT
I got the photo from photobucket. They have a ton of art coffees...

DD used to be known for great coffee. Since I now drink only iced - and began that a summer or two ago because it took too long for Starbucks coffee to cool down for my busy schedule - I don't notice negative flavors as much.

I think it has to do with not scrubbing the pots frequently enough in the dishwasher. A lot of restaurants don't do that nearly often enough, and the taste is terrible. Depends on the Starbucks you go to, too.

Love your ideas I'll have to steal some of them. I love flavored coffees especially Vanilla and Hazelnut.
Kathryn E. Aug 31, 2009, 11:49am EDT
They are sooo good. I also bought Hazelnut chocolate from Ikea and put some in the hazelnut coffee with evap milk!

Made Hazelnut yesterday and back to Caramel Spice, which I think I will have just with evap milk today...

Will buy a mild breakfast blend for the rare times I want something less than

MAJORLY STRONG........

My favorite: French roast coffee (about 14oz in my mug). Put in a serving on hot chocolate mix and 1/2 oz of Kahlua. Whipped cream on top, of course.

I wonder how long it takes to learn to make 'whip cream' artwork like the picture. Wish I could recall where I had coffee served like that. I remember not wanting to ruin the topping.

Any places on line for this type of food art.
