I am nervous

I often get nervous..all of you know this. This one can be a big one. My oldest daughter for some hair brained reason decided to take a trip to Europe all by herself. Her husband left for boot camp two weeks ago and she left for Iceland last Wednesday for a nearly two week tour of Iceland, Germany , Hungary and a few other spots. She had asked me to go. She got a "good "deal.

We haven't had any real contact with her other than Facebook. Her lastest messages are that she is sick. I am nervous, she picked up some virus over there. I just sent her a message that maybe if she is Germany she can find a US Base or Us Ambessy and see a dr(since her husband is in boot camp). I am worried about her dehydrating. She had been sick for four days.

A parent can never stop worrying ...no matter how old they are.  I know me...I will be telling her " I told you not to go" for a long time. I kept begging her to change her mind. She told me that .."you know when you want to do something and everyone wants to do something else...well now I can do it" ....boy I think I installed too much independence in my girls. They go further than I even would with the loner bit.

I am scared for her.

lol, a lot of people. I did it when I was 16, scared the crap out of my parents too.

that is scary, I don't blame you for being nervous, I'm sure she will be fine, but she should check in with you at least once a day, by phone. It is good to be independant, but be smart about it. exspecialy when traveling out of the country. Please let us know once you here from her.

Hope she feels better soon. I would never go to Europe by myself but then again I watch too many scary movies - I think anyone who has seen Hostel would have a hard time being convinced to vacation in a foreign country even with a few friends! LOL

she can also go into a pharmacy.. I found in italy the pharmacist can help you as much as a doctor as far as prescribing medicine to help.

I don't blame you for being nervous. I am a real worrywort when it comes to my kids. I'm saying a prayer for her .

I shouldn't worry. We have doctors in Europe - all she needs to do is either talk to the hotel where she's staying, or drop in at one of the hospital's A&E department.

My children all had a gap year (aged 18 and before starting university) - they travelled the world - one of them (male) as a lone traveller. They all came home in one piece!

I think it is so nice that you are so concerned about her and her health. But, the trip might be just what she needed, even if she does get sick. You know your daughter better than any of us though, so I hope that she does seek medical treatment.

I think it's sweet that she got sick and called her Mom. She was probably laying in the hotel room and just wanted some loving words from you. She will be feeling better soon. It's just kind of crappy that she had to get sick on her trip.

On the one hand, I admire her independence, but on the other hand, I don't understand how someone could go to Europe! by themselves for 2 whole weeks. It stinks, though, that she got sick while she's over there, especially by herself. Although I think that it's a mother's perogative to worry. I hope she gets better real soon and gets home safely.

I did hear from her and she is still sick. I told her if she is near one of the US bases try to get to see a dr(her husband is in The Army)if she doesn't get better - a couple of days with stomach issues is not got and she might need fluids

First I have to say I'm jeolous. That sounds like a great trip. It sucks she got sick. If she's on a tour, the tour guide may be able to help her find a doctor. A lot tour companies use local guides.

Donna, congratulations...you've raised a very intelligent and independent young woman. I know you're worried, but she's gotten herself out of tight spots before and she'll get through this. It is a bummer to be sick on vacation...but I think you're probably making yourself far sicker than she is by worrying. Just trust her and she'll do what she needs to do. Keep us posted.
