When I lived in San Diego, California, there were regular flea markets called swap meets. A long time ago, my husband (a native San Diegan) says, they were good. Now they've become so commercialized, they're a waste of time.
Recently, Romeo, Michigan, where I live now, had a village-wide garage/yard sale. I did find six things: four little and heavy irons from the early 20th century, one old hard cover copy of the book To Kill a Mockingbird, and one old hard cover book Little Women.
I have Little Women in the freezeer; it was rained on the night before the sale. They let me have it for free.
