Hey you, random Gather.com user, I see you have created a new group and sent me an invite to join. How nice of you for thinking of me! First off, thanks! Second, there are some things you should know before I join:
- If my joining your group means you think I want a private message sent every stinking time you post something to that group, then guess what? I don't want to join.
- If my joining your group means you think I want to sign up for some stupid little newsletter you send out every week or whenever to promote your group, then guess what? I don't want to join.
Why is it that some of you think it is OK to bombard us all with 1, 2, or even 3 messages every time you post something? If you are that eager for points, then you should take the time to do a lot of commenting and getting established on here, rather than spamming all your 'friends' and expecting them to do the work for you.
Got it?
OK! Thanks! Bye!

you know we aren't allowed to even THINK such things here at the WARM & FUZZY Club....
shhhhhhh.
I open EVERY blasted mass email I receive. Why?
It's the only way you can block the sender, which is how I recommend dealing with such idiocy.

In todays PC world I applaud anyone who still says what they think, good work Bill.
1. Some groups on Gather are for posting any old thing, but some have specific themes and only accept on-topic articles. This is so that people interested in those particular themes would be able to find the articles they want in those group without having to wade through a slough of irrelevant stuff, including Gather Whine Messages™.
2. Many of these Real Themed Groups™ are moderated, and the moderators get an email every time someone wishes to publish an article to them. They are not any happier when they receive requests for off-topic articles than you are when you receive spam.
3. Said situation, as well as the setting off of random Gather.com users' frequently overactive irony detectors, can be avoided by reading each group's guidelines. Or, if that's too much to ask, at least the name of the group.
Otherwise, of course, I agree with your points.
And the people who create a new group (or five) every day, and don't monitor any of them, which probably isn't necessary since none of their groups is about anything.
And then there are the ones that drop things like this in comment threads, but never a comment specific to the article so it's doubtful they even read what's published to their groups:
Thank You For Posting To:

I only broadcast in groups that have indicated that that is the primary purpose of the group. If I find it too difficult I can always leave the group. What I do find disappointing is that I clicked a notification for "Book Review Central" and got this rather than a book review
Oh, and I disagree, this article has nothing to do with Christian discussions, so I am declining to publish it in that group. I hope you have a better week, and a blessed day.
I have four groups. One of which (not the one you submitted this to, which BTW sorry this article does not pertain to the subject matter of that group) I do send out e-mails on a semi-regular basis. I do this to introduce new members, ask questions of the group etc. Two of these groups are moderated as to content to keep the subject matter in line with the "charter" of the group. The third is more of a "free for all" which when I have the time I try to comment on as much as possible, and make those comments as on point and non-generic as possible. The fourth? It is to honour a person on Gather I respect and to be honest I am still thinking that through. I have been mulling over the mass-mail thing, but before implementing it I would put it to a vote. The decision would be based on what the group members say.
I also receive e-mail notifications in my personal e-mail when people submit things to my groups that are moderated. I am not annoyed when people submit things that are outside the group content to my groups, they are still small and I too submit things that are not within their "charter" to groups sometimes. To err is human, to forgive is divine. Another platitute worth mulling over "Patience is a virtue". Thank you for sharing your thoughts Bill.
The purpose of us adding friends and making groups here is so we can mark the ones we want to read. I don't need a bunch of messages with links back to articles. It's annoying!
