ivy league elitism

These graduation speakers have become more about ce;ebrity than intellect. How else would explain George W. Bush speaking at graduations?

I guess my question would be more of why do they want her to speak? I'm more interested in the purpose of her speaking than in why they don't want her to speak.

Elitism...

Why shouldn't she speak? She has much to say about success in the face of adversity. We have every one of her books here in our house. I have only read a couple, but she sure knows how to grasp a readers attention.

You don't have to be Albert Einstien or Stephen Hawking to make a meaningful contribution in life...

They wanted her becasue she's done so much to get yound adults reading again.

I agree, Wilma. I've read none of her books (shame on me) but she has gotten people reading again, and I think that is a major accomplishment. My niece and nephew both just came alive with Harry Potter and then grew up with him.

It sounds very much like elitism. Elitism is a powerful political force in any venue. Years ago I wrote a very credible and practical teaching tool for senior safety. I published it and began utilizing it in the community to keep seniors safer. Quickly, I was contacted by the snobs in our community and challenged that I did not have a doctorate and should not be publishing works on senior safety until I had done university level research. After 15 years in home health, I had a very good grasp on practical ways for seniors to stay safer in their homes. A university level research would not assist me with that. They put so much pressure on that I backed off for many years. I am not going to now. Not just snobs, they are powerful snobs who would lock you out of community participation just because you do not massage their own egos.
Wow...I have a really bad attitude about that, don't I?

Definitely elitism... the fact something said may not be difficult to understand does not make it unworthy of attention. The very idea is ridiculous, and is typical of the type snobbish thinking often exhibited by those in the university community.

I have not heard her speak.... and if they didnt want her to speak...was there a reason for even asking her in the first place?

Personally I would rather have her writting more books.. hehehe
