I remember my grandparents used to let me help them with their gardens,it was fun to watch stuff grow.
An easy to grow flower that is beautiful and easy to care for is Amaryllis they grow relatively quickly so its fun for children to watch them grow, after they bloom and the blooms are no longer pretty you can cut them off and then cut the stem and leaves off to about 1/4 - 1/2 inch above the root then store it in a cool dark place for about 4-6 weeks then bring it out and start growing it all over again.
I have 3 that have bloomed previously and will be getting the flower stem on them within a few weeks.
