Alert - Ohio Ban on Pit Bulls. Is your state next?

I truly believe in patience... but patience doesn't always mean sit back and wait to see what happens!  Sometimes you need to take a stand and that stand allows for things to begin to roll and then you wait with your patience! Prayer helps as well!!

Which brings up the subject of a law going to the House of Representatives on the banning of Pit Bulls in Ohio.

its sorta like the gun issue.. "IF guns are outlawed only Outlaws will have guns."


I am an animal lover and i believe that if you have good skills you will have a good animal. I work hard with mine.. hours and hours to make my animals part of my family.

But to ban one type of animal because of a few is just ludicrous.

Do they not see the end results here.. its not just a breed gone, its...

1. families being torn apart
2. children losing their play mates
3. the emotional side of having lost your dog. (Any one that has loved an animal and  then lost it through death or having to re-home it .. or even through run away knows that there is a humongous time of mourning. )
4. who is going to pay for all the psychological effects this is going to cause?
5. where does the govt stop. Next it's your German Shepherd, Rottie, Doberman, Husky, etc etc.
6. its government regulating our households

In our city they almost did. They do let us have them, but you have to have 50 thousand in insurance.

That's ridiculous! I love pits. All my dogs have been full breed Pits and they were some of the sweetest dogs ever. It's not the breed that's bad, it's bad owners who make their dogs mean ... Do away with them, not the dogs!

I agree with Katie. It's not the dogs fault, its the owner and how they raise them. Every dog can be a good or bad dog. As far as my state, they are not banned but in some cities here they HAVE to be registered if they are pits. I dont remember exactly what they said about it a few years back, but they made some new laws regarding pit bulls.

I think forcing anyone who has a pet to carry insurance is a good idea especially with exotic pets or high risk breeds. It is the owner not the breed, I agree with that but it is too bad that too many owners of same breed were crappy! I used to have a rottweiler and it was one of the sweetest dogs I ever had, I have no idea why people are so scared of them. Right now I currently have a springer spaniel/collie mix.

Here is why I think requiring insurance is a good idea.... let the insurance cover problems like bites and such and stop making good animals that nip at a kid for pulling their tail or trying to ride them be put to sleep for "biting".

As for banning a certain breed of dog or any pet, exotic or otherwise, my opinion is THIS IS RIDICULOUS.... why not try BANNING ILLEGAL DRUG USE, DRUNK DRIVING, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, CHILD ABUSE or all these other more important things FIRST then worry about peoples' pets and companions after you fix the real problems that are out there. I live in Ohio, I am not angry about this law but just baffled at why the hell this takes precedence over REAL problems that are out there!

Ugh, I am so very against banning a breed of dog too, it's so stupid and doesn't solve a darn thing.

Its ridiculous to ban a breed of dog when most in the breed are sweet, friendly pets. Can we ban a whole nationality or race of people because a few of them commited crimes? It would be the same thing. I love my pit bull very much. He is very friendly and loves people, other dogs, and cats. I take him in crowds of people, to dog events, to dog parks, and to doggie play groups with 50 dogs and 50 or more people all having fun in one fenced yard at the same time. I have had no problems with him being anything but friendly. Kids come up to my pit bull and pet him and he wags his tail and licks their hands. A woman ran over his tail with a double stroller with 2 kids in it and he yelped but didn't try to bite and he quickly forgave. A border collie tried to attack him at a frisbee competition and he walked away and didn't try to defend himself. He doesn't bark when strangers come to our house and he welcomes everyone in our house and yard with a wagging tail and affectionate licks. He wouldn't make much of a guard dog. My daughter's pit bull is sweet and great with kids and other animals. He is 72.4 pounds and mine is 61.4 pounds. My pit bull sleeps with me at night along with my cats. Now why would anyone want to ban a dog like that? My son was attacked and bitten by a neighbor's German shepherd and had to have 2 layers of stitches in his leg. Nobody tried to ban shepherds. My other son was attacked and bitten by a rottweiler and it took 20 stitches to repair his ear. Nobody tried to ban rottweilers. Our granddaughter was bitten by a mixed breed dog that lived next door and jumped the fence into our yard. No one tried to ban mixed breeds.
No one in our family has been bitten by a pit bull! My pit bull has been attacked two different times by different Boston terriers (two each time!) Should we ban Boston terriers? Ridiculous!

Actually Kimber - child abuse, domestic violence, etc. are banned.

Perhaps if I grew up with a dog, let alone a pit bull, I would be more sympathetic.

These dogs scare the crap out of me. The news reports about them don't help matters. If I see one when I have my daughter with me, I stay as far away as possible.

In other words, this law is fine with me.

Wow.. thanks everyone for the great information... I myself have been bitten about a dozen times.. 2 x by german shephards.. and 10x by little tiny dogs.. arggghh (I used to be an Avon lady).

I have a schnauzer that is much more aggressive then my mixed breed... I love animals.. big dogs are more predicatable in my opinion.. much gentler and much more stable then a nervous little dog.. but I think that alot of reports come from biased opinions.. and small dogs.. well.. you just sorta wash it off and dont report it.. but doesnt mean it wasnt a bite or that it didnt happen. Big teeth leave big marks.. !!!

Don if you took all the little dogs and grouped them together.. i bet you have 10x the bittings then the bigger dogs.. :????

I have two little dogs..They have never bit anyone. But than again I have taught them not to. Now if I could only teach them not to chase cats..hard to do when they were orginal bred to chase rats in germany. Chasing is in their genes. can't stop it no many what I try. So, I keep them away from cats.

Even thou I don't like pitbulls I feel the same about them. They were bred to attack and it is in their genes. No matter how much we try and domesticate them...it will happen. Either to a human or another animal. Just like wolves...pitbulls are not meant as pets.

But I do not believe the breed should be banned. I do however think stricter regulations on owning the breed should happen. Such as all all pitbulls owners should be requireed to have a fenced in yard. I don't care if the front or back yard. But it must be fenced.

I think the word needs to get out that we need to stop Government from mandating so many things.. our animals.. seat belts.. pretty soon we will be like other countries and they will mandate how many children we can have. Where do we stop it..

That is exactly what I am afraid of. I don't think an animal should be killed off because of irresponsible people. Education is a good step.

Oklahom is working on such a ban now. Some cities in our state have already banned them. It's not just pit bulls. When I got homehomers insurance they wouldn't insure me if I had a pit bull. So I don't need someone to tell me not to own one. Pit bulls are inherently dangerous. Not all, but enough to keep them away from me and mine. If you want to own one, that's your business, but why not a poodle. I've never heard of a poodle attack.

UM>>> maybe not a poodle attack Carol.. but I was bitten pretty darn bad by a poodle.. and a pom and other small dogs at least 12 x in my life already. A bite is a bite is a bite.. I dont want any dogs banned.. what I would rather see is irresponsible people banned from owning any type of animal if you can't control it.
I grew up with German Shephards and I am so embarrassed to say that these dogs would bite. I swore when I grew up that my animals would not bite and if they ever bit I would put them down. The problem is.. all breeds of dogs have been known to bite.. and usually for a darn good reason... past or present and owners.. find excuses to keep said dogs.
If you are afraid of a certain breed then by all means pass it up and by a poodle.. I myself have no want or need for a poodle.. Not after I have been bitten like I was. I also have no desire for a german shephard for the same reason. But I am not afraid of them , but I have learned to stear clear of owners that have nasty dogs..

We already have a breading baan in Ontario.
I really do not think that the goverment should be able to tell us what kind of dog we can have. I use to have a pit bull terrier when I was younger. I made my grandmother take him away from my unlcle (who was pitting him). He had several issues BECAUSE OF THE TRAINING he went through, but he was the best and most loyal dog to us, and he loved us kids so much.

I truly believe that it is all on the owner's head and the environment that they are raised. Just like kids....If you do not discipline them or raise them right...they end up going to school with a gun and killing people. Maybe we should ban any more child births.....

There is just something in a pit bull's make-up that makes them deadly when they attack. They have a job and will do anything to carry out that task. Even when they suffer serious bodily injury themselves. They just keep coming back for more.

I have never had a pit bull. I see lots of them around town. It seems to be a cultural thing. Like, "look at me, I am a bad ass with a bad ass dog". Some people in my neighborhood were busted for fighting their dogs. Personally I think they're beautiful animals but I am afraid of them. When I see one I don't know if he's a friendly, well trained pit bull or if he has problems.

I don't remember seeing so many pit bulls around here until they started talking about banning the breed. I think that kind of talk just enforces the belief that they're bad asses. As far as insurance goes, I don't think there is any amount of money that they could give me in court that would make up for the maiming or death of my child, my dog, or myself.

I don't think they should take a pit bull away from their owners and euthanize them but I think maybe they should all have to be rendered sterile. And when the last pit bull dies out the breed dies with it. That's just my opinion, for what it's worth.

I think what my main concern here is not only the banning of the Pit bull but that the government can keep coming in and taking things from us. Its not just about this one dog... its about everything they take away...

Sorta like an abusive partner... if they take away your pets, your friends, you ability to be creative.. or successful then they have power over you!


Let's not let them take one more thing from us!

I can remember when they were trying to ban German shepherds and doberman pinschers. I didn't think it was a good idea back than to ban any certain breed. I do think insurance should be required by all animals thought to be aggressive. I have no idea how it would be enforced thou.

I can remember when I lived in Ohio. certain counties had already had a ban on pitbulls and anything that look like a pitbulls mix. They would take and put down. They didn't care what the dogs papers said they were. I thought it was wrong than to.

So far pitbulls are allow in my area of Florida. I don't think they could do a city wide sweep and get them all. To many people have them. Dog fighting runs rampant down here. People who dog fight or is any way involved in dog fighting operation should be given stiffer sentences and should have to face jail time. Most get nothing and walk away.

Betsy, thank you for posting this. The banning of any one breed simply makes no sense. There are rarely bad dogs, but rather bad owners who have not socialized, trained, housed, cared for or handled them properly.
