Hibiscus
(to Kimberly Ripley, whose winter bloom inspired me )
A cat runs through the yard,
she picks up her knitting from
where she has left it
before death becomes his.
The hibiscus has bloomed
slightly late this year.
She can see the color,
she can see the cold porch
on which he has left the pot.
The old envelope carrying
the ominous news
still lies over the bookshelf .
She can’t see it from here.
But she can see the plant
with its late late flowers
as if a spirit has come.
She knits and knits a sweater
no more of any use…
