My Dad's most profound lesson was unspoken. He was a hard working man , often working several jobs to support his family. That lesson has been my journey as well.

after typing that and seeing Karen's it came to me..

I watched my Dad build a solar collector out of an old hollow core door in the 70's with nothing more than an idea and a book

what Dad left me was the IDEA that 'you can if you want to bad enough, most times'.

My dad taught me a good work ethic, which has served me well in an era where a lot of people don't feel like doing certain things on the job.

He taught me to play golf when I was 8. I played for one year, and I hate it now as much as I did then. Though I will admit that when my mom used to golf several years ago, I would go to the driving range with her to whack a bucket of balls out...
My stepfather never questioned my decisions even if they were not good ones, he let me make my mistakes and then learn from them.

My Dad's was two that I can't pick between. One was, "Anyone who works for wages and votes for a Republican just shot himself in the foot."

The other was, "Never buy a red Ford, never let anyone give you a yellow dog, and never bet on a horse with four white feet." We proved the red Ford one when we wrecked our red Mustang 3 times in 6 months. Finally totaled the stupid thing, and ourselves in the bargain.
