HARD TIMES HAS FALLEN AND IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU

Hi, my name is Jay, and I'd like to say from the depth of my heart, that I feel for anyone, and there are many that have fallen on hard times.

I've been reading for a while here on gather, and listening to people pour out their hearts about the thing that has happened to them, I won't name any names but there are many, more than I would have dreamed about.

When we do have a roof over our head and food on our tables and clothes to wear, we have a tendency to forget about the unfortunate ones out there on the streets sleeping in card board boxes with not enough food and very little clothes.

We had a homeless man to come into our Helping Hands program.

At our church looking for a coat and a Blanket, but he refused food because he didn't have any place to store it. It is so sad to see anyone in that condition. However, if we that are not so unfortunate as they, we could give a little something in some way to help them.

I would like to be able to feed and clothes every person in the United States, but I know that's impossible, but if we that can,just feed one each, then that would a lot of people that wouldn't go to bed hungry tonight.

I wish every person in the USA could read this and take to heed to what I'm saying, but it won't get to all on Gather, so that all I ca do is try.

It is amazing how many people go without. And the donations that do go to the homeless, many times it is just junk food, and not nutritious at all. More must be done to deal with this issue.

We need more people like you in this country..It sadens me to see so many people in hard times,I have a roof over my head and food at times but its tough..I have to go to the local food pantry to get by...

That's right Heather we feel more compassionate to the ones that we can see. There's a lot of people out there with pride, and they hesitate to beg for anything.

It is very sad. I think when one lives in a smaller community or rural area there is more of a camaraderie and watching out for those less fortunate.

Yes, and there are people out side of our communities, that need help to. but if each community would take care of their needs, then almost all would be taken care of.

I agree completely, Jasper. We don't have much ourselves, but we still manage to find ways to help in small ways. If I'm able to get food or toiletries on sale for cheap or free with coupons, I get it and donate what we don't need. It's a way I can help without having money!

It feels good to be able to share. I can't help but think how many people could have been housed, clothed and fed with some of the stimulus money that has gone to self-serving interests.

Jasper - I am unable to comprehend what I am reading. But surely, you don't mean to say that this Jay of a person is sobbing for aid from within US? Well, either I must be suffering from hallucination or you must be merely communicating a call for help from some developing countries far away. As a matter of fact, when I hear about homeless and starved, I can reflect back to an India of a couple of decades back. But with the scale of progress having risen on expected lines, India has a different outlook as of today. And it may also be said to India’s credit that even recession did not have any devastating effect on its economy or the standard of living.

Otherwise, surely we need to ensure that the poor and starving millions (?) need to be helped and cared for, just as we find it difficult to see a starving member in our own family. Well, it would surely be life time experience to see a smile on people’s face who are deprived the basic items of life. Good post and thanks for it.

I too understand the need to help so many people. We do not have all the basics and I try to feed with donations to the church and local food pantry.

What I fear is when even in the spirit of giving it is still not enough.

Through your local church is the best way other than personal giving, for when you send money into those org. you see on TV, only a very small percentage go to help people, the most goes for salary's.Thank you Darlene.

I once read in a book that one's ministry should provide for themselves and their families. I am wrong to question the salaries of those ministering to the needs of the poor, hungry and homeless?
I can not give to these organizations because the amount they request is far more than my income would allow.

It's ridiculous how much some of those tv ministers get payed, along with a Jet plane, couple of expensive automobiles.

Jasper,great post, very true! I live in central FL our community runs on the tourist dollars,so central FL has really been feeling the recession. All I have to do is look around me and see how many homes are now owned by the banks due to foreclosure. I ask myself daily where are these families going?????? How are they going to survive??? Homelessness is not only a man or woman anymore, it's families. Yes, it's very important now for neighbors to try to help one another, many of our neighbors might be going through hard times and are too proud to let anyone know!!! Again, Jasper excellent post!!! There's alot of Homeless where I live and it's sad to see them that way. I have a friend that's homeless but she turned her life around for the better. Now she has an RV to live in

As bad as it may be, I believe people will survive and become a more wiser person, they will know how far to go in debt, and not live beyond their means, and this doesn't apply to all homeless,

Thank you Sunaura, that is so wonderful, and you are right hard times do bring people together. Back when I was a child everybody was having a hard time, but that was the way of life back in those days. People didn't think anything about it for everybody was in the same boat, and everybody helped each other.

I'm so sorry that you have to do that, but I used to have a hard time between food and Medicine until I got a Rx America prescription card card, and it really did help me. Do you have a card.

I do have prescription coverage, but some of my prescriptions aren't covered. Out of pocket expenses can be rather high. I do understand what people are going through firsthand. I can deal with being slightly low on food, as long as I have what I need for my kitty. Some months are better than others, for which I am very grateful.

Thanks for posting this reminder. My Husband and I are thankful for what we have, we have been very fortunate. So in return we are trying to help others. Donating a lot more to the food bank and clothing drives. Soon it will be time to adopt a family for Christmas..we have never done that before.

What a wonderful article. I sometimes work with the homeless children and try to help where I can. It isn't much but sometimes something is better than nothing. This truly touched my heart. Thanks.

You are right, but it is harder for some than others, but I think we will all rise from with a lot more knowledge how to live our lives, what we can afford and what we can't.

You didn't read Lydia's link. There is a really easy way to end homelessness and hunger in America without it costing anyone anything. (In fact it will greatly increase our overall standard of living.) Check it out.
My son recently found a home, after almost a year without one. He was luckier than some; for most of that time, we could help, and he had unemployment checks which kept him in a motel (which was a dump, but a bed and a roof,) with whole families occupying most of the hotel. A family of five, in one room...

Yes, hard times have indeed fallen, and it could be any of us. We must count our own individual blessings, and not begrudge those who don't have what we have. My life isn't going as well as I would like, but I'm not on the streets looking for shelter. For that, I say a grateful prayer, and then I use the other prayers for those who need them more.

I've always believed and taught my children that true wealth is the ability to give to others no matter how much or how little you yourself have. Now, if we could just get others to believe that and act on it, things would be better for everyone.
