Lipstick Plant

The two little children I sit for got me this lipstick plant for Mother's Day.  So sweet of them. :)  Their Mom said they thought the world of me and wanted to buy me something for my day.  Well I'm sure that maybe came from the 7 year old and the Mom as the 9 month old just smiles and laughs at me. ;)

I've never owned one of these before.  From what I'm seeing from looking around on the internet they are a houseplant which will bloom these gorgeous red trumpet looking flowers.

Has anyone else grown one of these?  Could I hang it outside if it was out of direct sunlight?  Or should I keep it inside only.  Right now it's just sitting in my kitchen window.  I would hate to kill it..lol  Anyone have any hints tips with this?

The leaves feel thick...like a type of succulent although I don't think it is.  I need to research this a bit more but thought I would ask my Gather friends first. :)

how nice, I have never heard of these id say if you do put it out Id put it in deep shade since its been inside. good luck with the new plant

It's beautiful. I've seen it around but never owned one. I do believe that you are really loved.

It is a very pretty plant even without the blooms to come. I had never heard of this before. Sorry I can't help. Have a happy Mother's Day.
That was o sweet of them! I wish we could see a picture of their flower. If you do start putting it outside, keep it more in the shade, you can gradually start putting it in the sun. If you start to see any shrivled leaves, then it is too much sun.

I thought so too Priscilla. :) Their always doing things like that for me. I'll post another picture of it when/if it blooms for me. I hung it out on my side porch. It's all out of any and all direct sunlight. It will get light but not enough to burn it. I'm going to watch it close. I'll bring it in if it looks like it's not doing well there.

That is beautiful. If you put it outside, be sure to let it have sunlight, but keep it a little shaded and water it, as the heat will dry it fast.

Thanks Margieanne! I had it outside in indirect sunlight but we had high winds for a couple days so I brought it back in.

I've never heard of a lipstick plant but it looks very similar to a plant I have. Mine leaves are a little more variegated though. I hang mine on the porch so its not really in direct sun for much of the day but it does get a lot of light. You said the leaves are thick right? Cause mine are thick and kind of remind me of a succulent type plant.

Exactly Moggy. This like a succulent. Do yours get red flowers? Maybe there are varegated ones. I'll have to look around to see if there is ones like yours and Shannons.
