Though it was getting colder and threatening rain, I was not leaving until I found one of the caves that Louis Bromfield had written of in his book Pleasant Valley.
We entered the woods near the sugar camp of which Bromfield had written
"I saw the sugar camp with its roaring fires and the woods streaked with the last melting snow and the fat horses steaming as they drew the sled which carried the great hogshead of fresh sap taken from the budding trees."
We maneuvered around the glacial rocks

After climbing over the tree trunk on the bottom right we spot a narrow trail

Just my luck that it's uphill. They'll be some huffing and puffing on this walk.

Glad I wore my hiking shoes

"Beneath, inside the damp cool cave, one goes back to the beginning of time, for in the damp ooze of decaying sandstone grow primitive forms of algae and ferns that have survived there somehow from the days when all the world was a steaming swamp"
Eureka! We have found it!

The choices now are to turn back, go through the cave or climb straight up this

"Do you think there are snakes in there?" I ask hubby.
"Don't know" he says.
"Could there be a bear in there?"
"Not likely" he says unconvincingly and so I opt to climb straight up the rocks. I didn't really like those pants I was wearing anyways.
And at the top I do indeed feel that I am somewhere primitive

It began to rain and we decided to turn back. Rather than climb back down we found the other side of the cave and went back through encountering neither snakes nor bears.
Cold, tired and hungry, I was glad that we had changes of clothing stashed in the car. We spruced up a bit and headed for the Malabar Farm Restaurant.

At times there is something to be said for civilization.

Lovely place inside and outside where there are roaming legions of bears, spiders and snakes waiting for someone wearing nicer pants.
Congratulations!
