I was able to stand on the hilltop that Bromfield so accurately described in 1943 in the book Pleasant Valley. Seeing what he saw gave me a feeling of time standing still.
In Pleasant Valley he wrote "It is a pleasant land all about you, valleys wheere the bottom land s rich, bordered by hills covered with wild and luxuriant forest"

"far down lies the blue shield of Pleasant Hill Lake"

"and the blue black of hemlock trees"

"Below in the rich land bordering the lake stand the big prosperous white barns"

"in May or October the whole sky above is filled with vast white clouds casting deep blue shadows that drift across the valleys and change the deep green of the hemlock to black and the fresh green of the new wheat fields to emerald"

"on the hilltop you feel remote from cities and strife and mankind itself; yet close at hand down at the far end of the damp green tunnel you come out again into the world"
