Some mornings I will stop at 7-11 and grab a coffee. I go to the same one. There is this one guy who works the counter and when anyone walks in he makes a point to say Hello. He also has conversations with the regulars and also sometimes initiates conversations with ones who are not.
Everytime I walk and he is working he is talking about this or that, just being "animated", talking sports etc. I was like "oh here he is again, Mr. Happy". I just wanted to get in, get out and go on about my day. The last few times I have been to this 7-11 I looked at his interaction with others. Everyone talked to him, had short conversations as they were checking out.
I thought, this guy is a 7-11 worker and look how happy he is and motivated. Then I come to work, in an office and see all these "big wigs" who don't give a time of day to anyone. They are to busy with their next meeting, their next big bonus, getting their Lexus washed. Here, this 7-11 guy may not be a VP, own a company, but he is a better motivator than most managers I see. His life is less stressed and he may not get paid what these VP's or managers do but he is doing what is important, taking the time to live life, appreciate things and give attention.
I see the other workers around him have a good time and I like going in there. Now, I dont just go in with the attitude of getting in and out. I listen, I smile at some of his conversations and I am reminded this is the life...the simple things.
This is another example how people can make a difference in someone's life and not even realize it.
