This book is a departure for me in that I don't often read memoirs or nonfiction. Giving it a chance I found that I really liked Designated Daughter by D.G. Fulford with Phyllis Greene. If was full of wonderful anecdotes and stories of the times D.G. (Debby) spent with her mother Phyllis after the death of her father. She moved back to Columbus, Ohio to be with her mom and help her out and I think that is really sweet. The book moved me emotionally especially in the wake of what is going on in our family right now. Midway through this book I recieved some difficult news I am not quite ready to share but it made this book touch me in a way I may not have connected with it before.
I also think it is really great that D.G. and Phyllis are writing together. All in all this was not an overly difficult read and it did not take me very long to complete. It was well written and I loved how Phyllis would follow D.G.'s views of things with her own. Throughout the book it speaks of recoginizing other Designated Daughters while they are out and about and I can only hope that one day if my mom needs me, I will be able to have the honor of being one for her! I loved reading about their relationship throughout everything and without giving too much away some of the little things in it like D.G.'s drinking. It shows we are human and everyone has problems but if we are lucky we have a wonderful Mom and a solid relationship with her to help us get through everything. I also love the theme of how sometimes when we are helping someone else it is really us that ends up being helped the most.
I enjoyed this book and will probably pick up other reads by both authors.

In the past, I helped someone whom no long could tolerate easily.
I did it because I loved my husband and he was too busy and too weak to do it himself.
It was indeed a growth experience.
One of the hardest things for some DDs is acknowledging the "humanity" of the participants. Your review recognizes this well.
Thank you for posting to tryingfor3000
i enjoyed reading it!
Nicely done review
