I'll tell ya... It started out being "one of those days"...
The moment I stepped out my front door, SOMEBODY started yelling at me! Here he is -- a little "acorn woodpecker" in the oak tree in my front yard... (I dunno why me... Maybe today was just "my turn"!)
(Look at that light-colored eye... Strange looking, isn't it?)
Then I looked up in the sky above the oak tree... Uh-oh! A red-tailed hawk! Hmmm... Maybe it wasn't ME the woodpecker was upset with, after all...
I can't seem to remember WHO it was that recently made the comment on one of my photo-essays that they've given up trying to take photos of butterflies and dragonflies because they said they seem to fly off when they even just THINK of taking a picture of one...
Well, wouldn't ya know it? One of the first things I found sitting there just WAITING for me to take a photo of it was this really cool DRAGONFLY!!!
He just sat there for the LONGEST TIME and let me snap a half-dozen or so photos of him... My very FIRST dragonfly photographs EVER! :^D
How cool is THAT!? :o)
And the clouds today were BIG and FLUFFY -- making for some really interesting and pretty photos, I thought... Here are a couple of those shots that I liked a lot:
And, today, I noticed that the California Quail that live down at the other end of the driveway have BABIES!!!
I counted at least TEN of them running behind mama but, by the time I'd gone back in the house to get my camera and come back outside again, they'd "flown the coop" (so to speak...)
The ones that live on my end of the driveway came out for their daily walk, though -- they don't seem to have any babies yet... (Gosh! I hope they didn't get eaten by a snake or a hawk or anything!) I was able to get a couple of really good close-ups of the little male:
He doesn't look like he trusts me too much, does he? ;o)
But -- I want a shot of those quail babies down at the other end of the driveway so bad I CAN TASTE IT!
Uh-oh! 8^0 ! !
No offense, little quail -- I didn't mean it THAT way! REALLY I didn't!!! My bad... Me sowwy... :^(
;o)
Right about then, I saw a butterfly light very nearby and it stayed there so long that I was able to get 3 or 4 good shots of it... Here he is:
I looked it up in one of my reference books to see what kind it is and, while I would've told you it was a "buckeye", It's NOT... It's called a "wood nymph"! (Isn't that just the coolest-ever name?) :o)
Then I got to thinking -- I take a lot of landscape shots looking DOWN the hill from my house (mostly of the vineyards in the Alexander Valley below us) but, I seldom, if EVER, take a shot looking UP at the hills to the west of Cloverdale -- so, I snapped this shot:
I think it turned out really well -- partly because the bottom half of the shot is "framed" by the vegetation... What do you think?
Well, I guess that's all I've got for you today, my wonderful Gather friends... (See? Aren't you glad now that you peeked and got a chance to see the dragonfly pix??? ...lol...)
Til next time!
luv,
jean

What a great photo essay to get my day in gear. It's unny I just saw a pick of a quail in Marianne's essay and I commented I'd never seen one before. Now here is your California quail - reminds me of a cross between a dove and a mockingbird. (Hey, I know almost nothing about birds)
The dragonfly - my - what an interesting one. I'd love to get a decent butterfly shot and a shot of our woodpeckers that come around.
Maybe one day - I have been chasing butterflies:)
I've seen this butterfly in our yard too - along with at least 6 other kinds. Great name.
Loved the last shot - how lucky you are to view such beauty.
(I bet you'll shoot the babies soon - in the nicest possible sense of course.
Enjoy the day

I especially liked the last one. What a view, Woman! How lucky you are.
I'm so glad you all enjoyed the photos, Ashley, Rose (of COURSE you did, Rose...;o) ), Sue, Paidra (ALWAYS a pleasure, Paidra... :o) ), Jan (they ARE kind of comical -- at least around HERE, they are!), Aunt B (glad we could give a "little boost", there!...lol...), Robyn (thanks SO MUCH, Lady! :o) ), Christine (yep... I'm a laugh a minute, alright... just ask my husband... On second thought -- ROFL!), Christopher (how sweet to say!) and Bobbi (believe me, I KNOW I'm lucky... and grateful for it!).
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
Except for the bird ones... I am orinthophobic.
I'm flattered, Doyle & Joy (too bad about that "bird thing" you've got, Joy... must get pretty dicey at the beach, I imagine...).
Lol, Jessi, evidently not YOU! ;o) ROFLMBO! Glad it was worth it... :o)
Sharon, my friend, you have a way with words that is absolutely ASTOUNDING -- you come up with the most appropos thing to say virtually every single comment that I've ever seen you make... Getting greeting cards from you would be like getting diamond rings from anybody else, ya know... :o) Thanks, Lady...
Wasn't he sumpthin', Monica? -- and LOUD! You wouldn't believe how LOUD and GRATING his voice is... Like "bionic fingernails on a blackboard" -- I swear! ...lol...

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Rosa & Amy! :^D
I do have my moments.
CC!!! If I was going to publish a book of my nature photographs, I would put "It's like nature poses for her" on the front cover!! That is one of the best compliments about my photography that I've ever received... Thank you so much for that... :o)
Thank YOU, Victoria, for managing both of the groups and spending YOUR time giving us amateurs a showcase here on Gather...
Awww.... Ron, my friend... I'm so glad you do... :o)
I rather liked the "cotton clouds", too, CF... I'm glad that you did, too!
If we travel up there one Saturday, will you take us with you? Oh please? This is so beautiful. The city slickers I usually hang out with need to be taught. There is ONE who would really enjoy these nature adventures.
Just lovely, Jean. We are in the season, too where it's perfect for hiking.
Excellent fishing up there too, huh?
I had to teach one of my friends how to do that as well, but at least he was willing to learn.
Beautiful. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you.
I'm so glad you liked them, Angela, Trista & Carol! Thanks for taking a peek and commenting... much appreciated! :o)
Bless you, TB, you are a wonderful friend!
Thanks so much for posting this to
my group
I liked him, too, Lora
I liked the dragonfly's turquoise and brown stripes!
Glad you liked them, Tinch! (That WAS a rather "snappy" comeback, wasn't it? ;o) )
Thank YOU, Curt, for looking and commenting! :o)
That WOULD be cool, Tinch... :o)
