In preparation for our day with the Cranes today I decided to publish a photo essay of the birds we saw at the lake.
We saw some little birds dipping down to the water, but as soon as that camera was on they were too far away. Of course when it was off they came closer. Just the luck. As a result there's not any photos of them. :(
The next birds we saw were a pair of mallards.

They didn't seem too bothered about us, but they weren't interested in being friendly either. They were just enjoying a swim nearly at sunset.

When they thought we had enough photos off they went.

The next bird we saw was a loon. What a treat it was to hear it call. It swam alone bobbing in and out of the water. It'd suface for a few seconds before going under the water only to resurface 10 or more feet from where you last saw it.
This bird is difficult to photograph due to it's in and out tendencies. I'm sorry the photos are not better quality, but it was 40 or more feet away when we saw it.

The next birds we saw were Turkey Vultures. They swoop overhead all the time at the lake.

The day might have been gloomy, but the birds were shining like the beautiful stars they are.
All photos taken with my Canon Powershot A560 camera. Most have been cropped so as to not to lag anyone's system loading unnecessary backgrounds.

I'm amazed at that distance we could even see the markings we did to identify him.

Indeed it is Nana. I hear there's more birds on the trails, but most of those are not really child friendly.

Charles I've seen them only once too, but have heard them up North in the past.
Tiffany, it's in the Dells area of Wisconsin. Thank you.
Thank you Karolyn. Indeed we did.
Thank you Chelsea. They are tricky because they often don't get too close.
Thank you Glome. Start shooting. Digital is very forgiving of mistake shots. :)
Thank you Rene. It was soothing for us to experience as well.
Thank you Jodie and Teresa!
Thank you Jeana.
Guess I'd better get down there & see what birds are showing up this year. We don't have loons here. A lot of mallards, geese, hooded mergansers, etc. It was fun watching the geese nest & swim with their babies!
Nice photo essay.
