I did a search tonight for events that happened on this day in history and found something that made me remember exactly what I was doing in January of 1989. As many of you may have read in one or two of my back posts I was at one time a radio DJ and as part of my duties I had to read the news. Most of the time I looked for the odd news, but on January 24th I was following a particular news story.
On that day the state of Florida would execute a serial killer and the world awaited to see if he would get a stay of execution. That serial Killer was Ted Bundy. Bundy confessed to killing 30 people, but it will never be know for sure if that was the truth. It is possible that he killed possibly up to 100 people over the years. In between songs I was running back and forth to the AP Newswire, searching for any new news and woud read it as soon as I got anything. It wasnt that it was important to the people of my state but that I had followed the case, reading the news, books, magazines, and watching the made for tv movie with Ted Harmon as Bundy. So more or less this was for me because I wanted to follow this evil man until he got the punishment he deserved. After I recieved word of his execution I would refuse to read anymore news for the rest of my shift.

Rushdie's Satanic Verses was also a huge topic as people were trying to get copies to read.
I don't have statistcs but looking back, Hurricane Hugo, compared to the last couple was low on the damage list. Of course, back then it didn't seem that way. You compare it to Hurricane Katrina though.
How about this. Songs like 18 and Life-Skid Row, Jamie's Got a Gun-Aerosmith, and Like a Prayer-Madonna were all released that year.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Bryan. I have to say the 80's are vivid as that was a time of high school and college. Great post. I will look for more.
