Very interesting quote, Jared! I have studied eastern philosophy and religion (including native American beliefs) since college. I am leaning towards taoism and away from Zen. However, I will look into your SGI writings and their Website. Thanks for sharing this valuable and timeless information!

This is very cool, but Im not sure its always true. Too many mindless tv shows and popular movies set the trend for culture these days.

Culture in the context of the quote is *all* the things we learn about how to do things from others. It is not confined to the arts. The user's manual for the computer you are using is part of your culture. The idea that you eat with your fork in your right hand instead of your left hand is part of your culture. The number of wives (or husbands) a person is allowed is part of your culture.

Great and diverse comments. Mr Toda, I believe, was speakingg of the more universal quality of culture; and the flowering aspects of humanity. I agree with each comment when taken in the particular context conceived.
