I remember in elementary school there were a couple of kids who were Jehovah's Witnesses. They didn't celebate any of the holidays and never came to birthday parties. I always felt kind of sorry for them.
One thing I never realized about this religion is that they don't vote. They also don't pledge allegiance to the flag and pretty much stay out of all things political.
Slate.com (part of MSN.com) has an interesting article which breaks it all down.

I guess that's one of the nice things about America - you have the freedom to practice whatever religion you want, even if part of your practice involves shunning the very things that have granted you that freedom. What do you think?

but really that is a recent development, since about WWI.
Intersting article Bill. I notice they mention "Render unto Caesar..." There are also certain religious groups that cannot take oaths. This is part of their belief system. Maybe they consider voting as taking a oath? I think there is an important issue you may have wanted to address in your article. These two women are role models in sports and in fashion. I understand they are following their religious beliefs and I don't fault them for that, but what kind of message does this send to younger people in america. I think people "selectively read" some of my articles on Gather. Yes some of them are long because if the article is about a news story I include that as well. My point is will younger americans "selectively read" this story and think "Oh Serena Williams does not vote, do I really need to?".
I quit going for personal reasons...but it was a nice time of my life..
When Jesus was going to be made King, by the Jews, withdrew into the mountain all alone. (John 6:15) Jesus did not suggest 'Make So and So King'. So, if, Jesus as a perfect man did not 'vote', what makes us think we know more than He does? Should people who claim to be Christians, follow his example? As Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses try to.
In a 1981 Census in Canada, 143,480 people counted themselves as Jehovah's Witnesses but in official Jehovah's Witness records of that that time, only 77,628 were counted at Jehovah's Witnesses. Which means that just because someone thinks of themselves as a JW, does not mean that they have met the standards of Jehovah's Witnesses. I do not know if the Williams sisters have met those standards or not. I hope this two cents helps.
Did You know that some liberals torch business in the name of earth? Did you know that some liberals have sent bombs via mail to kill corporate Americans?
Funny thing is that most liberals complain about religious people and their voting habits. Then again they don't complain when democrats give speeches in Black churches every Sunday during election years. Liberals wear hypocrisy on their sleeves.
And you wear it in your heart, Jeff. "Torch business in the name of earth"? Damn hard for those businesses to operate on a dead planet, which is the outcome your "slash and burn for greed and profit" beloved convictions would eventually result in, according to almost the entire credible scientific community of the world, minus a few fossil fuel shills.
Don't forget Ron to look under your bed before you go to sleep. I wouldn't want a CEO to get you. BOO!
Did you know that Jehovah's Witnesses don't even think that you are doing the will of Jesus if you are not following this teaching?
"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even
unto the end of the world. Amen."
~~Matthew 28:18-20
Did you know that Jehovah's Witnesses believe that they are
the ONLY Christians, or
the only followers or disciples of Christ?
They believe this because they follow his teachings and his WORDS,
at least they believe they do.
They think the rest of so-called Christendom does NOT, and are destined for Hell for their hypocrisy;
did you know that.
You might put it another way --
they think that YOU are the weird one.
They may have a point at that, now, too,
because Jesus did say:
"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even
unto the end of the world. Amen. "
Jehovah's Witnesses are correct when they say that they don't see other denominations doing this, or at least,
not many other denominations doing this.
I guess it depends on your perspective as to WHO is WEIRD.
Just to be clear, Jehovah's Witnesses do profess Jesus as their Saviour.
I always sleep with a gun, thanks though.
ROFL at Ron and Jeff.
They sometimes try to obscure this failed prophecy, and say that he came 'invisibly'.Yes,all other Christains are awaiting Jesus return, the JW say he ALREADY came back in 1914 and is only working through their Watchtower society.
Jehovah's Witnesses have lost membership in all countries with major internet access because their false doctrines and harmful practices are exposed on the modern information superhighway.
The Watchtower is a truly Orwellian world.
