I think oil is so 70s and we should push the panic button and work our bunnies off to find some different form of energy. McCain includes all that, too.
He has even said (I saw it myself on TV last night) that Obama is "More of the same".
????????
This will certainly be a campaign about energy.

More Oil?
More ????
Then he said "Let the states decide" as though it would be anyone OTHER than the US taxpayer cleaning up the next 30 million gallon spill washing up on beaches in Florida! The man's willing to pander at ANY level for a vote . . .
Pathetic.

That doesn't mean not aggressively pursue other courses of action at the same time. We need to be somewhat realistic though too, and realize that we will still be on oil for fuel for some years to come. How many of us can afford to run out tomorrow and buy a hydrogen(?) run car for example if suddenly available?
whos Oblama ?
McCain changing his mind on drilling will lose the election for him. It's a big flip-flop. I'm writing in the name of my cat.
Hybrids have batteries that contain nickel which is harmful to everything. And what are we going to with them when they die and need to be replaced?
Wind energy and solar energy are hard to store and need to be stored in batteries ... again, the same problem with disposal.
But I am also willing to be educated if I have misspoken. Please, enlighten me! Is there another, better, way?
No, there are no better ways.
This coming from a SAFEGE monorail advocate with 8 years of trying.
On the economy, if energy goes lower, the economy will improve.
The War: I will be very fascinated to see if McCain can finally pin Obama down on withdrawal of troops. Obama is being cagey here, if McCain can nail him on his backtracking, he can score some major points.
I agree with Mark-John, immigration will be a constant and the southwest should be a major battleground area. It should be interesting to see how Obama's immigration policy evolves, we know McCain's.
McCain has offered a nugget or two toward energy policy in recent days. Whether they are simply election gamesmanship or real proposals that he will work for can't be known until after the election. Based on previous "ideas" like the gas-tax holiday I remain skeptical.
However, it's a start. What is needed is a frank evaluation of energy options. How much oil is there? Where is it? What are the environmental, political, economic, and national security implications of continued dependency on oil? What other options are there? Is nuclear a viable option? Why or Why not? Will solar or wind energy be viable everywhere or not? What other sources of energy are there? How much should we focus on new sources of energy versus conservation? What combinations of all of the above (and more) would make sense for a long term energy policy in this country and in the world? Will we go it alone or collaborate with the other major (and minor) resource utilizers in the world (some of whom will eventually surpass the US in the relative wastefulness of those resources)? Is any of this even possible? Or should we start looking for another planet?
Unless we, and at our behest the politicians, are willing to get an accurate assessment and put all ideas and options on the table we will never be able to develop a sustainable energy policy.
Are we willing to be honest with ourselves and with our elected representatives? Are we willing to give the green light to either candidate to speak frankly?
Actually, we don't know McCain's immigration policy. We know what he tried to do with McCain-Kennedy. But that didn't work too well. He's already shifted dramatically from his original position.
In truth, "positions" on any particular issue must by necessity be fairly broad during the campaign. Not only can no one candidate unilaterally come up with a definitive plan on how to accomplish any particular goal, it would be meaningless to do so. Policy must take into consideration not only a candidate's values and positions but those of others as well. Add to that the fact that only Congress can actually pass laws and the President becomes more someone to set policy priorities, with the details to be hashed out by his staff, key members of Congress, and other interested and/or expert parties.
David K, No, the politicians will say whatever they believe will get them elected. They are hoping this issue goes away in the fall.
Question: there are an estimated 18 billion barrels of crude, and 77 trillion cubic feet of natural gas off of the coast of Florida. I understand how you feel about oil, but would you be in favour of going after the Natural gas?
I agree; aside from "closing the borders" (uh, right) how has McCain's immigration policy changed? Interested in hearing about that.
Natural gas, a different situation. My opposition to oil is a cause and effect issue--we get off oil, we destroy the terrorist infrastructure and send our Arab "friends" back to the stone age (sand age?). And then there is the additional environmental perk.
I am not familiar with our natural gas reserves or where the majority of the reserves are. Educate me.
The majority of our gas supplies are in three places, unfortunately the three that are deemed "the most sensitive" by environmentalists: Outer Continental Shelf, Colorado/Mountain area, and ANWR. There is now also believed to be a HUGE supply in, of all places, the Dakotas.
The offshore supplies are considered to be, far and away, the most abundant. So, what do you think of going after THIS resource?
I agree, and would LOVE to see our Arab "friends" and their efforts decimated by our embargo; however, I'm skeptical that the rest of the World would follow. THAT would be a problem.
Thank you Mark-John, I have no problem with natural gas exploration. My quest is to rid ourselves of oil for the reasons I have stated.
The obvious answer is that they're enjoying record oil prices so much that they've got no incentive to do anything different.
The worst thing that we can do is give them the rights to the rest of our potential oil and gas resources, so that they control that too.
The reason there is no drilling taking place on those acres, is that there is no oil on them. Pelosi and her gang are lying through their teeth on this charge, and they know it. Don't be fooled.
You're trying to tell me that all of those 6000 oil leases are absolutely worthless?
Don't be fooled.
The Bush gang and their oil company puppetmasters are trying to hand over control of our remaining oil resources to a bunch of multinationals who have no obligation to even sell the oil to us.
Any company is in business for profit; no oil, no profit, no drilling.
Look, I don't like the way things are going any more than anyone else; but for someone who is as dumb as you all say that he is, Bush certainly is perpetrating a high number of VERY intelligent and dastardly and HIGHLY COMPLICATED maneuvers. No?
Answer: because they don't WANT us on oil; and they don't give a DAMN about the people of this Country, they care about their own AGENDA.
Do you honestly think that Bush is the mastermind of his administration? He's surrounded by people much smarter than his is.
If you're so certain that the Bush Gang has the best interest of this country at heart, why doesn't Cheney release the transcripts of his meetings with the oil company executives? What are they hiding?
Why are the Republicans AGAINST drilling on existing lands?

Please answer this as well...if Bush is surrounded by people much smarter than he, why is EVERYTHING he and his administration does "stupid?"
Do you honestly believe that oil companies have your best interests at heart? I've presented articles supporting my position, while you and Mark haven't produced anything other than the usual Bush Gang rhetoric.
Without proof, your allegations are empty.
No; I think that the oil companies have THEIR best interests at heart. Therefore, what Kay has said, (I don't mean to speak for You, Kay, but I agree) "why would the oil companies ignore all of those potential profits?"
Erik; if you knew anything about me, you would know this; I am not a member of the "usual Bush Gang..."
Are you going to answer my previous question?
We are in an election year and the dems are desperate for the presidency. The "evil" oil companies are the perfect bogeymen to distract Americans from our own stupidity in not solving our energy issues earlier. You must demand answers from your elected representatives and facts. To proceed on conjecture and rumor is simply dishonest and ignorant.
And, You are most welcomed to do so!
Why would the people who are in charge of safeguarding our interest turn over the remainder of our oil resources to companies that have already shown that they're not interested in our developing what they have?
The "polls" only show what the Republican oil industry wants you delusionals to believe - not what society actually needs.

I am angry at anyone who insults my intelligence to that extent. I graduated from college, I can read and write and remember something from a week ago. mcCain, just stop.
They are the same ones that sort of elected dubya.
Gotta get the intelligent among us to the poles.
Thought you might enjoy that, in keeping with the occasion.
While everyone wants to talk about how much the oil companies blah blah blah, has anyone stopped to think about the employees of these oil companies? They don't get paid enough to PAY these high prices for gas and drive across the country to put their lives in danger away from their families to drill for those of you who don't appreciate it... Ignorance is bliss apparently... I am sitting here mourning the loss of one of my husband's coworkers all the while knowing that he gave his life to drill and if he could come back from the dead he'd tell you he wanted to get back up on that rig and drill some more...
Every other week we say our goodbyes and off my husband goes to drill so people can have the gas and oil they need, yet they complain about it... Then we have our troops who know why they are there and want to be there for reasons perhaps you don't want to understand... In my opinion, the men and women putting their lives at risk willingly for those of us sitting at home need to step back and listen to what those men and women have to say first hand before we come to some sort of standpoint on this...
