So I figured this out the last time I was traveling. I like to have a bottle of water with me most times because I am thirsty a lot and I know that flying can dehydrate you. But I don't like to buy a bottle of water and then have to throw it away when I go through security.
Well ... I figured out that you can take a nalgene bottle (empty of course) through security with and just fill it up with tap water when you get to the other side. It saved me from spending money on a plastic bottle that would have probably ended up in a landfill, not to mention the fact that I felt so travel savvy to have thought of it in the first place.
And the security people were really nice about it. I was totally expecting to have to negotiate my way through with it since I know that they won't even let you take bottles half full of lotion that are only a little larger than 3 oz. I even forgot to empty it when I went through security on my way back and they just asked me to empty it out and send it through again. It was actually a very pleasant experience.
Anyway, I thought I would share this with you all and hopefully you can save yourself a couple of dollars too the next time you fly somewhere. It may only be $3, but it really adds up in the end, especially if you travel a lot.

Especially since now most airlines have stopped giving free drinks on flights and it is so expensive to get anything to drink in the airport.
Atleast I am allowed, when traveling with my daughter, to have her sippy cup with something in it.
