Now, I just had to talk about this because insects are so cool. Many people do not like insects, but they are very important. Just imagine life without insects. Sure that might seem pleasant to some of you..mosquitoes or fleas- maybe? They have always fascinated me. My friends had ant farms and I kept the lightning bugs in the jars for a little while. (Then released them.)
However, it was my Entomology class in college that really made me appreciate the biological significance. They have been around on earth for nearly 400 million years. About 925,000 species have been identified, and scientists believe that 15-30 million have yet to be discovered. Pretty cool for such small things. They help us grow crops, produce food products, and are an edible delicacy in some parts of the world.
All bugs are insects, but all insects are not true bugs. True bugs the order Hemiptera includes cicadas, planthoppers, aphids, stink bugs, etc.
My favorite insects are grasshoppers or katydids (Orthoptera). They seem like happy little creatures and are very pretty. I love to chase them around the yard or try to observe their behavior on a blade of grass. Beetles are really fascinating too.
What is your favorite insect? Why do you like them or hate them? (Non insects - Arachnids -spiders- are welcome to the party too.) Remember spiders will eat insects and keep them out of your houses.
Before you kill the next one you see think about - "what is it doing to hurt me?" Thanks for talking insects.
