Daniel Patrick Boyd, his 2 sons and 4 other men, 6 of whom are U.S. citizens, were arrested by federal authorities in North Carolina. Authorities stated these men had recruited others and trained with high powered weapons to wage an Islamic holy war overseas. They had trained in camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan and were planning on providing support to terrorists to murder/kidnap people overseas. The six U. S. citizens could face life in prison if convicted.
The indictment describes a plot that begins 3 years ago. The North Carolina men raised donations to support training and recruitment. Some of the information available states these men believed that all good muslims would be involved in the extremist view of holy jihad. They also offered weapons training in North Carolina and assisted in thier recruits travelling overseas.
Although the indictment provides only minimal information, it does outline a plan for four of the suspects to meet in Israel, as well as other oversea cities. The conspiracy, according to the government, included others and it was to provide financing, training, transportation and personnel to those wanting to fight a holy war against allies of the United States.
The indictment states that Body traveled to Gaza in March, 2006 and tried to go further into the Palestinian territories with one of his sons. About a year later Boyd(who calls himself Saifullah--Sword of God) his son, Zakariya and two other men went to Israel to "wage jihad" but failed.
During the last two months, Boyd and some of his cohorts practiced with firearms/weapons on private property in North Carolina.Boyd had fought in Afghanistan and trained in guerrilla camps there and in Pakistan, but this was between 1989 and '92 against the Soviet Union. This was partially financed by Washington, D.C. with military and intelligence, training and "soldiers"(read mercenaries, etc.)
This is not Boyd's first brush with the law. He and his brother were convicted in Pakistan for bank robbery in Pakistan in 1991 and was identified at that time as a member of an Afghan radical group. Both sentenced to have a foot and a hand cut off for the robbery, but the decision was later overturned.
At the first hearing, there were no attorneys for the defendents at that time and no statement was made to the press by the suspects.
At this time, there is one other suspect who has not been arrested as of today.
