Will the real John McCain please stand up?

I found a tidbit in an article from the 2000 presidential election that made me remember why I used to have great respect for John McCain. Back when he was a maverick:

Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley recently revealed plans to reduce corporate welfare by $125 billion, providing a "hit list" of unnecessary business breaks. Republican candidate John McCain followed by outlining plans to eliminate $30 billion in corporate welfare.

 

Ah John, we knew you once.

I agree with you ... at the beginning of this election I actually considered that I might be voting for John McCain. I still want to remember him as being a good guy, but it is hard with the ridiculous pandering he has done for the Republican vote. Even so, should he win the race I think he will be fairly moderate. I sent more money to the Democrats because now I do not know what John McCain represents anymore.

John McCain was a maverick 10-15 yrs ago but sold out to be accepted by the right wing.

In his effort to best his dad's rank, he's gone against everything he once stood for. What a pyrrhic victory it would be to win as someone else.

It's gotten so ugly in the past few months that it's hard to see if there will be any of the old McCain left when all is said and done. I'd like to believe, though there are cynics, that his reaction to the woman who called Obama an Arab was an unprompted one, a natural reaction of someone who had a moment of clarity, if even for a moment. That is what I would like to believe.

McCain left McCain behind when he decided to run. Unless you agree with rabid Right of the GOP you have only two options: get them behind you at all costs or give it up. So he morphed from pro-Choice, anti-Bush tax cuts straight talker who rejected the leaders of the religious Right as "agents of intolerance" to his present incarnation. And then came Palin. So, no, there's only the tattered remnants of the McCain I used to respect.

It is so sad, because the old McCain might have been able to bring us together instead of tearing us apart.

McCain is the only one of the two who has any possibility of bringing this country together. Obama's plans are going to tear this country apart and have businesses leaving.
