I am referring to the furor of fear that is abounding over President Obama's planned speech to school-children of the importance of education. There are some out there that are saying it is a disgusting left-wing plot to turn kids into brain-washed zombies of the Obama-socialist-fascist network. Fear mongering seems to be getting more and more out of hand these days.

Its all so easy. First you must be able to look others in the face and be able to tell a lie without flinching. Then you must be able to take a normally sensible topic and though details are all over the place reverse the meaning of it and tell all others they are liars and just plain wrong. Explain to them how if they don't do it your way they will certainly be a communist with socialist ideals. Then it is necessary to learn the art of Double Splainin . Double Splainin is the well crafted art of saying one thing, denying that you said it but being very upset if others do not agree with what you denied you said.

I've seen Double Splainin used perfectly while the speaker holds a sign up showing the president painted in black face splainin how this president has no business pretending to be president even though a majority of the voters voted him in office. Then in the next breathe tell the world this president is actually from Kenya and is not a US born citizen. Followed by a disclaimer that I am not prejudice cause my ex wife's brother lived next door to one just like him. I'd vote for Alan Keyes or Clarence Thomas but not this so and so------------------ ( insert any nasty name you wish) cause he is just too evil.

I deleted my comment because I was joking around asking if Nancy was being brainwashed. Then I started reading what others are saying about the president speaking with the school children.
Spencer has put it all in an understandable comment with which I totally agree.
What is the matter with the president of the united states speaking WITH not DOWN to our school children? Nothing!

I know you well enough to realize you would know I was joking. But the more I read (from Ruth's ABC post which was sensible and informational) to what others were saying, I seemed to have jumped into a discussion I had not realized was going on.
We have enough problems in this country with out adding to them with innuendos and rumors.
I think for the first time we have a leader who looks his questioner in the eye in his effort to provide a truthful answer and he becomes suspect because the questioner is not familiar with a truthful answer. A sad thing because truth is what will win out.

I'll admit to being a bit snarky about the far right view and the fear mongering, but yes, I agree with you.

Still the message of President Obama is about education and nothing political as the far right is trying to make it.

Nancy, I have gone through all of that, and have had trouble finding anything that would justify the uproar. I guess it is okay to use kids in an primary school level when you speak to the nation from a school (ie GWB from Silver St Elem. pushing his No Child Left Behind agenda), and for good PR shots by reading to children, but if you actually address kids trying to encourage them to continue their education, it is a different matter on all sides.

The strategy behind the reasons for the uproar is simply out of line. Those opposed must have a hidden agenda which others on the same team cannot grasp because the arguments against the president speaking to school children sound more and more like a PR response.

I spent 25 years working at a community college urging kids to go on with their education. Works for me too :)

I haven't heard anything from my sons' school about this. I don't even know if they are playing the thing at his school. I just asked him about it and he said he didn't hear anything about it at all.

If they play it, I don't mind if he hears it. He loves school and does well. I am not worried about this at all.

I don't know why Obama (or any president) speaking to kids about education would be propaganda, seems like the far right is REALLY reaching. I grew up as a kid in the 80's, and vividly remember the " just say no" campaign, Nancy reagan traveled around and talked to school kids about that- and I don't remember anyone complaining about it.

I remember her doing that.... thought it was one of the greatest things ever. And as far as I know they are still teaching "just say no" in schools. I agree, it's outrageous what they are saying, it's almost like everyone has the right to speak except Obama.

I think Fox News may have brainwashing power. The few people I know who watch it all have the exact same things to say about certain subjects. (Although maybe it's a pod people thing)
It would be really nice if I could hear the word socialist used correctly even one in 1000 times. It's worse than the "loose" for "lose" on the wrong use meter.

Yes, I know, it's sad, because they haven't really looked into the reality of what it's all about.

I didn't understand your post when I saw it yesterday, Nancy. Last night on the news, I saw teachers speaking out for it and that in-famous Obama poster in the background as they were reporting.

I am simply outraged that they keep showing that poster at every opportunity and to attack a speech by our president, before it is even given - well it is beyond my understanding.

I read in the comments above cato broadcasted against it before the White House even released anything.
Ummm - free speech - condemning words that haven't been said. What are they really saying here? We want our kids to remain pure - untouched - ignorant - of thoughts, opinions statements and incentives that we do not approve of?

Shut up, Mr. President - we do not want to hear what you have to say and we do not want our children to hear it either - the answer is NO - before you even speak?
