You know, I'm not fond of cell phones. I had one for a while, but then got rid of it. I think it's crazy the way Americans are letting phone companies rip them off for phone service! But, that's not what I want to rant about.
I want to rant about text messaging! I think it's wonderful that folks can communicate for a fraction of the cost of a call, but you know what??? I think when you are visiting with someone, you should save the texting for later.
My daughter called me yesterday. She lives in the city I work in and was calling to tell me to come over early, if I wanted, and we could hang out. Well, I called her back and she wasn't home. So, I left a message and said if she still wanted me to come over to give me a call. She did call so I went over. I had 1-1/2 to visit with her. 1/2 an hour of the first 45 minutes I was there, she was texting every few minutes, while I stared at the wall. We did get in about 15 minutes of visiting interspersed between texts. Then, about 45 minutes into our visit, in come about 5 people, ready for a beer party. My daughter had been texting everyone to come over to party! I stayed for about 10 minutes and left right after 4 more people came in.
So, now, I'm really annoyed (after coming down from angry). But, now that I got that off my chest, I'd like to hear from others, young ones with cell phones and parents, and how you guys handle this. Am I wrong in feeling that this was really disrespectful on her part, especially since it was she that invited me over?
Today, she called to ask if I had an extra door around our place. It seems after everyone got drunk, someone kicked down her bathroom door. I told her she should call a friend who has helped her out before and has access to a motel that is being torn apart, and see if he had some. Then, she asked me if I wanted to come in for work early so we could hang out again. Needless to say, I said no.
So, anyway, please discuss. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I bought my daughter a pay as you go phone and told her I am giving this phone to you with minutes on it, once they are gone, you will have to earn the minutes! Her phone, has no minutes!

Since I'm older, I'm not into texting. The only time anyone has done that while with me was only a few times, but I wasn't happy about it.
My son is so insistent that I not take a call while with him that my frequent callers will get off the phone if they call while we're sitting home watching TV. We can train these people.
We really must do it quickly, too. At a restaurant last week, as I passed by all three people at the table were texting others. It's gotten common to see people dining together, but both on their cell phones.
It reminds me of the movie "Fahrenheit 451" where people aren't connecting any more.
