My sister and niece have written beautiful pieces about Brutus...one of my babies. This is about my wonder at the birth of him and his brothers and sisters. I got their mom, Curly Sue, from my sister, when one if her neighbors was hassling her cause Suzy got loose. She joined our household, which included my oldest son, Midnight and I. And the rest was history....before we knew it, despite our best intentions, Suzy was expecting. She hated being inside the house. The outdoors was what she wanted.
So, on one of the coldest days in Feb, 2001, Suzy decided to have her babies outside in her dog house. Fortunately my son was home that day and realized what was going on. He called me at work and told me that we were having puppies. He brought her and the puppies into the house and settled them as best he could in the bathroom.
I came home from work that night to find 7 puppies in the bathroom with Curly Sue standing guard. She was so happy to see me. I picked up the puppies and they were so tiny...I could hold 2 in the palm of one hand. I put them all in a cardboard storage box top and took them and Suzy into my bedroom with me. It was warmer in there. Suzy fed them and then wanted to go out. I guess she figured they were safe with me.
When I would get home at night, she would feed them and then carry each one over to me and drop it. Then she would go find a place to hide. So they became "our" babies. When she got tired of them or wanted to get away, she would give them to me and take off.
Suzy was part husky and part chow and whatever else, Midnight was black lab. We had 3 long haired-fluffy puppies and 4 that looked just like their dad.
Brutus got his name because he just pushed himself in where he wanted to be and just seemed like a Brutus. My son kept one of the puppies for himself also, and named him, Samson.
Those puppies really did feel like my babies. I would come home at night and say, "Babies, I'm home" and they would all come running down the hall to greet me. Once they could eat and drink on their own, Suzy decided that being a mother was more my cup of tea than her's, so she went back outside. Now, lest anyone think that we were trying to deprive her of them....she even broke a window to get outside one day. That was how much she really hated being indoors. The weather that Feb and March was just too cold for them to be outside for any amount of time.
That was my precious Brutus' start in this world. I will probably share more stories about him as time goes on. He was a very special baby and I loved him so much. He brought me such joy.
Thank you for letting me share a bit about my Brutus.
