No need for comments?

What did I miss????   I have seen various articles over the last week stating that comments are not needed to generate points/dollars.  Only a ten rating.  What is up with that.  Does any one where I can find the original article.  I have checked the TOS and am lost.  Thanks for the info.

Sigh. Does it matter, really? Comments are what make this place a community. Without them, we'd all be a bunch of people trying to hawk goods to no one. Yes, in theory, comments themselves don't generate points, while pageviews and ratings do.

It was said, but comments generate activity on your site and activity breeds points from what I understand...or I could be mistaken.

I had not heard that, but if it was true, and people just stopped commenting and started rating, what would be the point of even posting. I think the feedback and conversation is what makes Gather such a great place to post.
Comments are not needed for points -supposedly-, but that doesn't make them unneccessary.

Thanks all. I sometimes leave a one or two word comment how cute etc but for the most part NOT.

Ramona, it has been done and yes, you get points for rating only (and the other person that gets rated does too).

Well I had an article up today basically about this and I knew I had read somewhere in an important article and it said we did not.. However it does make since what Dan Cole said! I think thats the most confusing part..

Im glad someone else did see that comment about us not cause I took my article down becasue I could not find that article to back what I was saying.

NO it dont really matter but people do wonder just like we wonder about all the other crap here..

Not many has stopped commenting just becasue of this .. However I posted a few pics today and on 2 I only got a rating which was a 10 and Thanks but I was irritated becasue I dont know who it was.. Then the 3rd pic got a comment and no rating..

People can not return the rating/commenting favor when you dont let them know you stopped by!

I do not think MANy people will stop commenting! I know SOME who rate and that pretty much it becasue they get their cash flow boosted alot!

You can not hit post ifyou dont have a message typoed up! ALl you have to do to rate is hit 1-10 and the stars show up and your done!

I skipped reading everyone comments. But wante dto say if you don't comment but just give a rating, how are your friends and other Gather members suppose to find your stuff to rate, so you can gain points?

The only way I would not give a rating of ten is if it were just something totally disgusting, profanity or playboy type pictures. there are young children on here too,

I took my article down becasue I was told We DO get points for comments and basically made me sound like an idiot I could not find the article that says you do not get points for comments.. So I took it down.. Did not care to argue with anyone since I could not back it up.. They will relaize and if not thats their deal. I seen the article by Tom...I must have mis read it from what I read here which makes since.. eiteher way I was right and wrong but some people use capitals to make it known they are right and I am clueless to what IM saying so.. like I said I just took it down.

I don't know, and I don't care!!! I thought someone put out an article that the ratings don't even matter it is just how many you view and how many views you get. Either way it doesn't matter to me. I like commenting and I like getting feedback. I will continue to do everything the same way I have been doing it!

I read and rate. I always give a 10, even if I totally disagree, because even if I disagree the person went through the trouble to think it as, as best they could, and write it out, as best they could, so I give them a 10.

If I understand their article, and they've expressed their thoughts well, and especially if I understand, and agree, I give a 10!, or a 10!!, or a 10!!!.

I receive more points when I comment than someone commenting on my work. I love leaving comments too and I've noticed that I've received more ratings than comments but my points still haven't moved that much.

I am not at all sure how the whole pointthing works but I did see the mentioned article where i says you do not get pints for commenting but from people commenting and rating your stuff.

I have gotten points for just commenting on articles and images, and for getting comments on articles and images.

I have not tried out just rating articles, seems kind of boring and rude for me to just do that to someone. I rate and comment most of the time or just comment.

I definately rate a 10 if I notice someone did a drive by one.

It is acceptable, but if you never comment to your friends. They will not visit your articles and images, it is better to let them know you were therre.
