She stared into the heavy soup pot as she slowly stirred. Hypnotized by the colorful array of vegetables as they swirled around and around, she felt a desperation inside that was coming to a boil...a need to escape. She could turn the pot down to a simmer, and slip outside under the pretense of going to get another pepper from the vine. Nobody would miss her until their stomachs began to growl. By then she would be long gone. They wouldn't go hungry for awhile. She always made plenty of soup...just in case the moment was right for her leaving.
