The very idea of Free Speech and open dialogue on our public owned airwaves has officially ended. It was not simply enought that the Obama Administration has decided that freedom should take a backseat to Government controlled wages, government owned industry, and socialized medicine, but now they want to control public airwaves too. Abc is going to spend an evening in the White House allowing the Administration sell their socialized medicine plan without the inconvience of having any opposition viewpoint presented.
First, the RNC asked they be allowed, like a time honored tradition, to have someone go on somewhere in the multi-hour program to debate the idea. Abc says No, they would rather just turn the whole thing over to the Obama Administration. Then a freedom loving organization inquired about rates to buy a 60 second ad spot during the telecast and they were told they could not buy an ad because it had an opposite view from the President.
I though we lived in America not Cuba or Venezula, but dont worry the media says you have nothing to worry about. They are not threating freedom or open dialogue.

There are other stations who would probably be very happy to air a GOP response. And there's always FOX, owned and run by the GOP. A 'tradition' is not equal to a 'law', by the way. And Obama is the President of the United States, no matter how much some people don't like that.
Yes Sheryl, but you are the same person who would have lost a gasket if they had given this privilege to GWB
Really? I guess you know me better than I know myself, MD. There is a certain level of latitude that the President of the United States enjoys. And, again, there are many, many outlets for the opposition to state their case. Look at the 'dueling' speeches of Obama and Cheney recently. They were not back-to-back on the same network, but they both got deserved attention and coverage. Stop whining.
so you think there is nothing wrong with not taking ads from people if they do not agree with a point of view. This is crazy. The media slobers all over this guy and now they will not even allow an open dialogue. Sorry if I believe in Freedom.
ModernDay ... I think there is something very wrong.
Do you know if Obama is paying for this airtime, or if it is given "free" or if our tax dollars are paying for it? For some reason I'm not abe to pull up any info no matter what key words I use.
No need to apologize - it's your opinion on the matter, seen through your own perspective.
Publius, You forgot to note tha ABC = The American Broadcast Company, CBS = The Central Broadcasting Station, NBC = The National Broadcasting Company, Although it is now the Nationalized Broadcasting Company. All 3 names illustrates the socialized state run aspect of our media.
So you think that all privately-owned media companies that utilize the public airwaves should be required to present opposing viewpoints? Wasn't that the point of the Fairness Doctrine?
The Fairness Doctrine regulated private citizens' opinions on the "public" airwaves, and it was wrong. If ABC's management agrees with the Obama administration, it's fine for them to present that POV on their station. It invites criticism about being "in the tank," however, because it's doubtful that everyone involved in ABC's decision agrees with all of the policies presented.
On one level, there's nothing wrong with giving the WH a forum to pitch their plan. Usually, a president will ask all of the networks to air such pronouncements of policy. They also usually give the elected opposition a rebuttal. This is no different than when Rush used to have Cheney on his show to pitch the administration's Iraq policy. Still, I don't think that they would appreciate being compared to Limbaugh.
Republicans controlled talk radio for a couple of decades - they still do. Some never allowed opposing views on the air, even from callers. So, for you to whine about ABC broadcasting from the WH is fairly amazing. Btw, where do you get the idea that Obama is proposing "socialized medicine"?
Let them put on their Obamathon. I say don't watch it. The Obama ship is springing leaks everyday. Just set back and watch it sink.
My words exactly!

Lee says: There is a plan in place ... considering Mark Lloyd is in charge of "diversity," over there at the F.C.C., this internet neutrality thing ... well, at the very least with Mark Lloyd (and others?) like him at the helm so to speak .... well seems like just one of the first forays - like the current ongoing hissy the President is having with Fox. Toes in the water sort of thing ... like this already donewith Obamathon, like the fishy comment address at whitehouse dot gov. Like the Humana gag order. etc etc Like the attacks on the ideas and beliefs, character and intelligence of townhall constituents by their own representatives . . .
Here are Mark Lloyd's words: “It should be clear by now that my focus here is not freedom of speech or the press,” he said. “This freedom is all too often an exaggeration. At the very least, blind references to freedom of speech or the press serve as a distraction from the critical examination of other communications policies.”
[and] What Lloyd says about Chavez is more than a mite frightening:
Officer of Diversity hrmpff! I read somewhere ... gee where is that .. never mind .. I read somewhere (and I've seen evidence of it myself) the diversity he is talking about is social and ethnic ... not irt the ideas or beliefs espoused. Social and ethnic probably as long as those are diverse, the ideas must be aligned with liberal/governmental ones. ??
