Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been nominated by Obama for the Supreme court.
What has amazed me more than anything is the silence by the GOP senators. They say they want to reserve comment until she has been properly vetted.
Just as when Sandra O'Connor was nominated this is a historic nomination as she is the first Hispanic to be nominated to the Supreme Court.
I don't know very much about her yet, I have read some comments from the far right already slamming her, but what concerns me is how this nomination could spiral the GOP party down even more. And it makes me think that is why they are being so cautious in what they say right now. If they without a good reason fight this nomination, they may very well send the Republican party further down the path of trouble that they are already on. By going against this they could alienate themselves from not only votes from Women but Hispanics.
Now the flip side of the coin, if they go along with the nomination and not fight it, even though she may go against what the party stands for politically they risk alienating people who are members and supporters of the GOP.
And a strong point that people want to see is that she will be a champion for separation of Church-and State, which is something Souter was known for.
Getting to know her:

I think that one thing Obama is considering with her is not just because of her race and nationality, is that this is a nominee that the Republicans supported in 1997
>
6. SOTOMAYOR SUPPORTED BY REPUBLICANS: In 1992, Republican President George H. W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Later, in 1998, President Bill Clinton nominated her to the 2nd Circuit, and she was confirmed with bipartisan support in a 67-29 vote.
All Democrats voted in favor of Sotomayor (although three did not vote), while Republicans opposed her by a 29-25 majority. Among those Senators who are still in the chamber today, however, Sotomayor's margin of confirmation was a bit more comfortable: 35-11.
Indeed, five current Republican Senators voted in favor of her nomination then: Sens. Collins, Gregg, Hatch, Lugar, Snowe. Among the no votes were current Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, current Minority Whip John Kyl and Sen. Jeff Sessions, currently the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee.<
I think it will be very interesting to see how this plays out on a political field, but one thing that really appeals to me about her is this :
>
4. HER JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE: As Tom Goldstein of SCOTUSBlog writes, "Almost all of her career has been in public service -- as a prosecutor, trial judge, and now appellate judge. She has almost no money to her name." The White House notes:
If confirmed for the Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years, and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed for the Court in the past 70 years. ...
In 1998, Judge Sotomayor became the first Latina to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, one of the most demanding circuits in the country. She has participated in over 3000 panel decisions and authored roughly 400 opinions, handling difficult issues of constitutional law, to complex procedural matters, to lawsuits involving complicated business organizations."<
I have to say that i truly think it is important for Supreme Court Justices to have federal experience. She has had commendable reputation and has done mostly public service which has not given her a lot of chances to save money.....I think this will play a crucial factor in the nomination factor.
How do you think the GOP will react to this nomination after she has been vetted? Will they become outspoken about her, and bury the party even more? Or will they support her and alienate the supporters that they have?

PS I chose the article from the huffington post because it told her experience and who she was as a person, suprisingly, the most factual article that I have seen.

Doe it ever occur to you to ask whether this is good for the country? Or is the moribund GOP your *only* concern?
you know the mood I'm in I could really tell you a thing or 2 right now, but I'm going to hold my tongue. If you read my post it wasn't all about the damn f---ing GOP, I praised her as a person, and gave my input on her experience..... so why don't you go back and read what I said outside the first and last paragraph which is all you seemed to read!
Mooch
I do not think that is what mooch is saying. She is saying why is the G O P being so quite. Maybe you should read befor you spout off
You know, it's a fair cop. I missed the last part. I apologize.
Thank you Sarah. That was a nice thing to do.
When you're wrong, you're wrong. And I've fallen into the habit of scanning stuff *way* too quickly. No more, I promise.
Sarah,
I'm sorry I jumped all over you, but I'm having a really bad day...so I apologize to....I had to bite my tongue on what I really wanted to say because I knew I would probably regret it later.
truthfully I do want what is best for the country, is she it?
She has some admirable qualities, but some of her comments make me wonder about her.

She is different from the majority of Hispanics in that she tends to be liberal. MOST are of a Conservative mindframe. Don't get me wrong, some go liberal (I have a SIL to prove it) but she definitely doesn't represent the majority of Hispanics. The GOP has nothing to do with her approval or not. If they vote no......they will be called racists, even though it has nothing to do with that. Look what happened with our recent elections. If you voted no for the "O", you got the label, no matter what your reasons. It's a toughy.
and once you are labeled like that its very hard to overcome.
Exactly. So right now silence is golden, Mooch, there really is no better alternative.
Thats right. If they vote no they will be called racists and woman haters. So They are just not saying any thing
I am not a Dem or a Repub so I don't know if they will say anything, but personally, I don't like her. From what I have read about her and the decisions she has made on some cases, she is a racist herself. (against caucasions)
Why is it that when the liberal democrats attack-smear-lie-try to destroy a black man calling him some of the most horrible things, one female liberal hater said this about Clarence Thomas-a black man- "I hope his wife feeds him plenty of eggs and bacon, so he can have a heart attack at a young age". Robert Bork was called a racist by a complete worthless liberal Drunken louse, Teddy. Alberto Gonzalez, an Hispanic was called the worst names by the caring leftist. Soto mayor and her wonderful life how she overcame tough times-Clarence Thomas survived tough times Soto-mayor could not imagine, his life story was a complete tragedy. Given away by his parents, lived in housing with no indoor plumbing. How was this black mans life-long story treated by the liberal haters-with absolute vile hatred of the man.
And listening to Barry Obama telling us to be non-partisan and treat Soto-mayor with respect for the life story she presents is laughable-Hey Obama', how did you vote when Roberts and Alito conservatives for the court, you phony, rejected them immediately.
Democrats can openly destroy blacks-whites,Latinos anyone who they fear will take their power away say any mean- vicious -nasty thing they want. But have a conservative speak out about a Latina racist about to be appointed to the Supreme Court by a fellow race thinker Obama and well we who oppose this type of racial liberal politics are just supposed to take-it. Keep-Quiet!!
The unfortunate thing is the Republican Party is full of cowards for the most part. So the race thinking bigot will easily get anointed to rule over us.
Whenever everyone is thinking the sameway-someone is not thinking.
Resistance is futile. Republicans cannot block the nomination, and I doubt she'll be any worse than Souter. Looks like a pretty even swap to me for Democrats. That doesn't mean, however, that Republicans should not make the legal case against her--no name calling, no slander, etc. Just a fair examination of her history.
I agree with you, I don't want to see name calling, I don't want to see it get ugly. I truly hope that if she is nominated that she will be the wisest choice for the U.S. I know its a historical nomination, however, I'm skeptical of some of her comments and remarks, I will reserve judgement on her until I hear more from her.
I do like that she has a lot of federal experience, and that is something most judges don't have when they become a supreme court nominee.
Mooch
Here we go again. We can not go after this Marxist-racist with the same zeal the democrats use when they proudly BORK- ALL NOMINEES that come before them.
Democrats have no problem slimming-lying, and openly try an destroy a "Black Man"-Clarence Thomas- or openly insult and lie about a Hispanic Man nominated for the judiciary. Democrats never get any blow-back for going after minorities-WHY?.
It IS TIME TO FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE- this woman a racist-should be treated no better than Thomas was treated. Suck-it-up-and take it crap has to stop. All means necessary should be taken to deny this racist a seat at the highest court in our land
Mooch,
I refer you to my analyais of the remark the loudmouths are calling racist. It is titled "I Would Hope" and the link to it is,

The more I read about here the less I think she is good for this country.
"“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
Nuff said........
Hey Mooch. Great post! Interesting take on the Republican party's fate somewhat being tied to Sotomayor's confirmation. I just posted an article on Sotomayor's Senate hearings before the Judiciary Committee today and tomorrow, and I know your perspective would add a lot to the discussion. Please comment if you get the chance! Here's a link. Thanks so much!
I googled Jeff Sessions and the guy seems to just come out of a KKK rally.
