I will put it simply. He lost because he was a Republican. He was in ALL manner the more qualified for this nation, but that will be something that the American people will have to deal with as a trainee takes the wheel.
I don't begrudge Obama his victory, it was hard fought, and historically it goes without saying. But, for once in my adult life I would like to see people choose on the true merits versus the shotgun approach. This same thing happened in the 90s with the promise for America when people were tired of the Dems. We all know that America votes for the moment not for the long term.
I say that to say that John McCain has NOTHING to apologize for. He has served this country far more than almost any citizen. He should be held in honor regardless of what you think of his political views.
He got caught by an economy that did not start to fail with George Bush, but certainly was not helped by him. People like to have selective memory, but Greenspan did this to our country and he served under Clinton first.

He lost because he is a Liberal. Obama merely "out-Marxist-ed" him.
One reason many people believe in Obama's ideas, and plans for this country.
McCain did not loose because he was a Republican...because for all the fear of too many Democrats taking over Republican positions - that did not happen totally...so some folks voted Republican on a local level...but not for President. .
McCain became erratic, and sadly, as the saying goes..."loose as a goose" I feel he lost credibility when he did not take his own party's advise several times thru out the campaign...one being about who to select for his VP...and his selection of Palin...we are now finding out did not have a lot of support as a good idea....
He was a man who like Bush, even tho he would not identify himself as such...got too deep into his own ego and tended to not take advice...sound like someone else we know in office now).....thats where he lost it...and people could see it......
And in reference to your comment - altho I do not say it is wrong
"He has served this country far more than almost any citizen. He should be held in honor regardless of what you think of his political views." To my knowledge no one did not hold him in respect and honor the whole past 2 years we have been listening to him tell us he's been tested......that dose not qualify him for the Presidency...
HE IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO SHOULD BE GIVEN THAT SAME RESPECT....HE HAS MANY OTHER AMERICAN "FRIENDS" WHO ARE RIGHT UP THERE WITH HIM AND can tell similar stories...
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS.
McCain's concession speech harkened back to the man who ran in 2000, and I commend him for it. I hope he is available to help Obama work on the challenges of the next 4 years.
The race is over. Lets work on being helpful now.
If he could not even control his own campaign, why would anyone think he could control his own presidency?
As long as the GOP keeps holding on to these fundamentals they will continue to lose.
Today accusations can be checked and lies or misleading statements do not stand.
Senator John McCain lost for two reasons which are intertwined.
He employed the Bush/Rove/Cheney destructo machine of politics, opting not to campaign based on the "true merits" and then hired an incompetent VP who was eager to employ Bush/Rove/Cheney tactics in order to win the election.
Had McCain conducted his campaign with honesty and dignity as did Sen {President-elect} Obama, the race would have been much closer.
The American people abandoned Sen McCain because he became what the people despise. All those Rovian campaign tactics of attempting to destroy the other with smears and lies was what doomed McCains last chance to become President.

McCain chose to go Right for that reason. He had a dilemma. Am I going to count on independents, 60-70% of republicans, and 10-20% of democrats to form a coalition.
OR
Am I going to go right, don't criticize Bush, and pick a running mate to carry the GOP base?
We all know what he picked and the rest is history.
McCain lost because he transformed from a real maverick and independent thinker into a desperate Bush clone with a temper.
McCain lost because he came across as petty, like a jilted teenager at a dance when the popular guy chose to dance with a different girl. Some of the crap that was produced as advertising against Obama rated of the same quality as the typical MySpace post.
He lost because, for all his talk of experience, he had no idea how to organize and administrate on a national scale.
Please tell us why you believe this
Who cares why he thinks so? Filthy often charges other of filth. The guy stinks through the computer monitor.
Next election will present Obama not with an easy liberal to defeat, but with a Reagan type Conservative a man of conservative ideas and the courage to stand by them. Last election liberal repubs. lost not conservatives. Ronald Reagan would have beaten Obama,easily-aka-Carter-2 states Reagan 48 states.
Greenspan was first hired by Ronald Reagan. The economy is in the tank because all of the breaks were given to corporations and the upper 1%. The economy needs consumers, as well. When the middle class is left out of the equation, there are no consumers. McCain lost because of stale ideas. Obama won because of better ideas. Obama is hardly a trainee. Obama has been a winner in many aspects of his life. He also knows defeat. He has leaned his lessons well. The country is lucky to have a real leader for a change, rather than a mediocre President who only has the job because of his connections to political circles. Obama didn't know anyone from the Democratic Party just eighteen short years ago. He worked with political skill throughout his career and is now the President elect.
The conservative ideas lost. They were tried and failed. The Republicans have a lot of soul searching to do, I'm afraid. If they don't understand this, they will fail again.
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Delores;
McCain lost because, as I predicted, he couldn't win on issues, so all he could do was sling mud. Americans are smarter than that.
There are no such people in the Republican party.
Would you elaborate please on how you intend to accomplish this? I am very curious to know what power it is that you think you wield.
Plus, I think some people were just being sexist by thinking that Palin couldn't run the country. Stick with the men, was what people told me.
Micky D., reagain is gone brother, why don't you go to the doctor's and get some meds ti cure you of rip van winkle syndrome and come into the 21st century with the rest of us? Even if ronnie raygun was out there running today he still wouldn't be the best person for the job. Thimgs weren't really all that good when he was in office anyway. Not to mention that he screwed things up for years after he left by us having to live with that he did while he was in office.
Mark John talks of the true conservatives and how they haven't gotten left behind. Another name for these people should be the "ones who hate everyone and everything different than them and their ideas" but he is right they did get left behind. That is what happens when you try to live in a past that really wasn't all it was cracked up to be, anyhow!
We played fair and smoked your asses.
There is hope for America after all.
I hope your party is secluded in the wilderness for decades to come.
