I like Gov. Sarah Palin but...

McCain made this choice purely on political grounds. Palin brings a strong (perhaps even extreme) conservative background, which McCain needed to draw in the evangelicals that don't like him. He also needed a woman because women make up more than half of the electorate and if he swings just a small percentage of them he could benefit immensely. He also picked her because she has a bit of an independent streak, and he wanted to project the maverick image. Picking her has successfully distracted everyone from the fact that he is erratic and bellicose and in lock step with Bush on every major policy issue (at his own admission).

So for the last week no one has been talking about his failings. And he knows that any direct attacks on Palin will backfire. Very clever politically.

Unfortunately the fact that he picked someone he only met once and solely for political expediency proves how unfit he is to be President. We need a President who thinks, not makes off the cuff decisions and waves his hands in the air. Unfortunately, that is McCain's history, and his future. We cannot afford that future.

Time to focus back on McCain.

As Mo Dowd quipped, 'Sarah is a zealot, but she's a fun zealot.' Brilliant move by McCain in choosing her. High-risk, sure. He doesn't even know her, as he did the others. He would have liked Holy Joe Lieberman , but he needed to get the backing of the "Conservative Right," and Joe would have done the opposite.

Palin was picked by McCain's master Cheney. McCain wanted Lieberman but was told not to pick him.

Cheney's pretty materful(if evil).

I do resent his decision based solely on his attempts to grab the RR, Chick, but striving for political position is in keeping with what I see he does with everything, so I guess he's consistent. That's about all I can say for him.

David K. - I agreed. We do need a President that can and will think.

Clarke M. - I have seen that idea McCain wanted Liberman, several times. Has anyone hear him say it?

Sue B. - This McCain of 2008 is nothing like the McCain of 2000. ( I voted for him in 2000 because I couldn't voter for either candidate then.)

I think McCain clearly likes working with Lieberman and he would have been a natural choice. But McCain is politically shrewed and saw that because Obama failed to choose Hillary or perhaps a rising star like Kaine of Virginia he had shown his insecurity and weakness. McCain realized by choosing Palin he could highlight and make evident Obama's Achilles' heel so speak to the voters and by this choice , which would show his own self-confidence and strength. McCain may not have a tenth of the intelligence of Obama but when Americans perceive weakness in a candidate it's over. It may well be over and if so Obama did it to himself.

She scares me. I find religious zealots that will lie, change with the wind and try to hide the truth dangerous because they only care about power and not about people.
