...Joe Biden

CNN, Fox News, AP and others all say they have confirmed that Barack Obama has selected Joe Biden as his Vice-Presidential running mate (see below for bio).

UPDATE: The Obama campaign web site has now confirmed that Barack Obama has selected Joe Biden to be his running mate.

From the Joe Biden Senate web site is the following biographical information.

Senator Biden grew up in New Castle County, Delaware. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965, and from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1968. Prior to his election to the Senate, Biden practiced law in Wilmington, Delaware and served on the New Castle County Council from 1970 to 1972. Since 1991, Biden has been an adjunct professor at the Widener University School of Law, where he teaches a seminar on constitutional law. He is a proud graduate of Archmere Academy, class of 1961.

Senator Biden lives in Wilmington, Delaware and commutes to Washington, DC when the Senate is in session. He is married to Dr. Jill Biden, the former Jill Jacobs, an educator in Delaware's schools for over twenty years. She currently is a professor teaching at Delaware Technical Community College. Senator Biden is the father of three children: Beau, Hunter and Ashley. Beau serves as Delaware's Attorney General, Ashley is a social worker and Hunter is a lawyer. The Bidens also have five grandchildren: Naomi, Finnegan, Roberta Mabel, Natalie, and Robert Hunter.

So, nobody cares that Obama wanted to send the message to his supporters first? They want to go ahead and project?

(Sorry, I'm a bit paranoid after 2000)

CNN, Fox News, AP, and others say they have confirmed the report, saying that the official announcement will come from the Obama campaign later this morning. Hey, I'm 6 hours ahead of east coast US, maybe we just get the news 6 hours earlier here :)

Even if it is correct, why would people be rushing out with the news before he makes his announcement when he has said all along that he wanted to make it?

Two of the "presumed" picks announced that they had received calls telling them they were not chosen. As far as Obama and Caroline Kennedy have said, they didn't release the names of the people on the list. This is all projected, or intercepted unethically.

If we want to hold the media accountable, I think we have to do the same ourselves. Maybe I'm projecting my ''want to hold the media accountable" onto everyone when I shouldn't be. If so, I apologize.

Sandy - I agree with you and have been vocal myself about the media being too quick to run with stories before they know what they are talking about. In this case I checked around and found several sources saying they have confirmed the story with "Democratic officials." I feel confident that this is an accurate report. If it turns out I've been duped along with the rest of the MSM and others than I will feel quite embarrassed and retract my story.

Biden would bring to the ticket a historical memory of how to get things done in Congress. He is someone who's straight talk is a reflection of his integrity rather than merely a campaign slogan. I see him as someone who would sit down with Obama in the Oval Office and tell him what he thinks. And Biden does think.

I like Biden and won't be disappointed if this news is true.

I am disappointed, however, that people (not just you, David) have decided to post this information knowing that it is not what Barack Obama would want, and that "three or more sources" have printed all sorts of trash about him, multiple times already. I just think he deserves more respect from us.

I hope I didn't offend you with my comments, David. This just felt like one more slam to Obama. He promised his donors/supporters they'd be first to know. So, the media jumps it, announces while a bunch of people who obviously submitted texting info because being first to know mattered to them for some reason waited patiently, and then all the creeps can say he didn't keep his word. Of course, they'll look foolish, but I'm tired of watching and listening to their foolishness.

I wasn't on the texting list, so I didn't know that for sure. But I didn't see anyone say they'd received a text and I didn't see the website change. I did hear earlier that fake messages went out. There were other reasons that this whole situation (again, not you) upset me that I didn't (and don't) want to discuss here.

There was secret service activity at Biden's house. That was part of the proof. I don't think Obama can fake out the secret service to run a scam on the American people. Someone in Obama's camp leaked the info.

I had been a supporter of Biden's because I felt we needed some real "straight talk," not just the campaign slogan kind. But eventually I decided that while he had the ideas I thought we needed someone with a slightly different way of presenting things. On the other hand, I have been routing for him (mostly secretly) to be VP because I think he is exactly the kind of person needed. He'll give his views to the President straight up, and Obama will accept Biden's views straight up. And unlike Cheney, Biden isn't going to run his own shadow government behind anyones back. I think Obama/Biden is a great combination - complementary. Which means we'll be able to get something done.

Biden is an awesome guy. He can think, he can analyze, he is honest, and no nonsense. he knows these issues inside out where almost all of the other candidates in almost all of the elections did not show the familiarity with the issues.

I have nothing but respect for Biden, and I think maybe this will be good for his career, in terms of getting some visibility. After being VP Biden will be ready for President, I hope. I am not sure what to think about Obama. I want to think the best but I just expected better from Obama so far.

I definitely agree that Biden will not run a secret government and hopefully will shine a light onto what Cheney was doing for posterity and all to see, since impeachment is not going to happen in time.

It's 4:30 A.M. here on the LEFT coast. My notification came at 2:26 A.M. via e-mail. (But the announcement was made on our local TV news last night at about 10:00 P.M....but they stated it had been "leaked".

I'm disappointed that the press jumped the gun, (and I'd fire the guy who leaked it) but I'm very happy about the choice. Good team.

I think the word we'll hear during Obama's rally today is "complementary." Their strengths complement each other. I agree. Good team.

And team is a good word for Obama's philosophy. No one does anything alone or by not listening to anyone but those who agree with you. Presidents represent all Americans, not just the half that voted for them. Obama knows this.

From the Wall Street Journal, Best of the Web Today - August 22, 2008 -

"Fox News, reporting on the vice presidential stakeout at Biden's home in Delaware, gives us a little taste of this:

Biden was initially playful with reporters, feeding them coffee and bagels Wednesday while acting cagey about whether he's being considered by Obama.

But on Thursday he snapped at a reporter who was in a car apparently too close to his property.

'Get the car off my grass, pal,' he said. 'Now.'

Biden brought no food to reporters.

Won't the vice presidential debate be fun if Biden is the nominee?"

Its odd just a few months ago Biden didnt think Obama was ready to be president.
George Stephanopoulos asked Biden and said, "You were asked is he ready. You said 'I think he can be ready, but right now I don't believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."
Political Radar" Blog, 8/2/07, Joe Biden lashed out at Obama saying, "Having talking points on foreign policy doesn't get you there."

I guess he doesnt care as long as he gets to be vp.
It is a good choice Obama made though. If elected at least someone in the white house will know what is going on.

Chick - I read an article somewhere in the last week suggesting that Obama reveal his cabinet picks sooner rather than later to show he has a team that can be counted on. We'll see. Usually the candidates don't mention cabinets until they win the election, but Bush in 2000 let it be known as early as March he would have Colin Powell as Secretary of State. That fact contributed to his support, since Powell was highly regarded. Ironically, Bush never actually listened to Powell and set him up as the fall guy for Iraq by forcing him to give that UN speech. From the beginning Powell was always kept as the outsider to the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz/Feith cabal, with disasterous consequences.

In another bit of irony, it's highly possible that Colin Powell will vote for Barack Obama this election. He hasn't committed either way but says that he is considering all his options. That in itself gives a hint at how he felt about the Bush Administration policies.

I have to admit I just could not care less about anything to do with Colin Powell, and I hope Obama does not try to resussitate that guy's career. Powell has no credibility with me anymore.

If anyone here listens to right wing radio at this point they have Obama where the want him, it is just a question of how loud they can up the volume. There is all rumor, innuendo and lies and it is shameless.

Having right wing radio stations throughout the country that broadcast commercials and editorial opinions that are pro-right, is not news, or any kind of public service, and all of these stations should their FCC license revoked unless they want to start conforming to the fairness doctrine.

I am sick of the right wing calling Barack Obama and the Democrats communists and such while they broadcast this kind of lying propaganda like Pravda!

I like Biden a lot, but this election has been made a travesty by Democratic voters who picked Obama for this without even considering Biden, and now the find in the real world they need him. It makes Democrats just look plain stupid. There is a lot of contradiction in Democratic ticket, and frankly I am surprised that Biden took the job.

Bruce - I doubt Obama is worried too much about Powell's career, which isn't likely to include political office again.

As for right wing radio, they like to hear themselves talk. I suspect they had scripts written up against anyone Obama could have picked. Still, they have influence over a large part of the country. So it will come down to how many people fall for the same old lines in the face of what Bush has done the last 8 years.

Change is hard. The status quo likes to protect its turf.

I disagree that it makes Democrats look stupid. On the contrary, I think it makes them look like they want to govern this country rather than institute their opposite version of the Bush/Cheney/Rovian era.

I suppose we'll hear from Biden over the next few days why he took the job.

WOW! the Prophet of change,Obama, has just picked the most inside the beltway politician in Washington, to be the change we were promised. Biden, nearly 40 years on the government payroll,Mr.Biden has worked a total of 4 years in the private sector. He is the epitomy of the government elitist, living in his huge home, driving his SUV,and rasing taxes. WHYYYY,Biden? well he did say Obama was articulate and clean. Biden also said -you know you can't go into a 7/11 or Dunkin Donut unless you have an Indian accent, and I'm not kidding. Joe, articulate, Indian accent, gee, many a conservative would have been called a racist-bigot for using your word's. Obama just let us know he realizes the American people think he does not know what he's talking about, when it comes to foriegn policy. Let's not forget Biden's solution to Iraq was to partitian Iraq into 3 sections, after all the war was lost.So according to Biden the best thing to do was to referee a civil war. BRILLIANT!!!

Mickey:

Do you always allow your empty head to be used for echoing
Republican talking points? Maybe it feels better than having
nothing in there at all, huh?

Biden is going to be able to deconstruct everything the
Republicans say and smack them in the faces with it while
probably making everyone laugh and educating them at
the same time. Biden has extraordinary talent and
communicative ability.

And what is bigotted about making a comment everyone can
see for themselves. It was a bad joke, at lesat he has a
sense of humor, and he is not joking about starting WWIII
as McCain did with his bomb Iran song ... and at least he
does not sing in public.

Iraq is not going to hold together without US troops so
partitioning makes sense, and it was not just Biden
who made that suggestion, it was passed bipartisanly
by the Senate.

Now let's compare that with your puppetteer who did
not make a move to surge troops into Iraq for 3 years
while men died, and money got distributed to his
buddies.

There is no civil in Iraq, it was created by the British to be
deliberately unstable with a strong man in charge.

Biden had the intelligence, the creativity and the politica
ability to get buy ion from both sides on his plan, but you
probably didn't realize that.
I mean Mickey, you are truly despicable, at least
make sense.

Who cares if Biden said what we all know about 7/11's?

It would still be a good idead to partition Iraq,

Micky, Valid points. After you fall in love with someone, you begin to notice their warts.

But, on the whole, Biden's experience would seem to be the best fit with Obama, if he can be careful about his remarks in public.

Ah Bruce, Once again inviting intelligent discussion, I see ...

Let me recommend the book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. A proven method for developing social and leadership skills.

Yeah, Randy, I am so jealous of your leadership skills but
I would not seek to emulate them.

There are few people that deserve a well-earned disdain, Mickey
happens to be one of them, Rich Kaye is another, and there are
some more crazies on Gather. I don't go seeking them out
and rarely bother interacting with them.

It seems interesting to me that most of what these people
do is seek out Democratic conversation and then try to
disrupt them with BS.

And if you think Mickey's points are valid you ought
to try keeping up with reality, this is a poltical race, not a
romance. But if you're looking for warts, try John McCain.

Biden was the only realistic pick for Obama after things started to heat up overseas. He is however, a verbal ticking time bomb, and I am sure reporters are taking bets on when he will open mouth and insert foot. By the way, did anyone catch the huge compound he lives in? It took forever for the motorcade to get to the main gate. I bet several of McCain's houses could fit inside! :)

Biden sounds better, more intelligent, and makes more sense with both feet and both arms in his mouth than any of the Republicans do at their best moments. You never catch Biden unable to tell the difference between the Sunnis and the Shiites, he is on point and up on every issue facing the US better than anyone, and that includes anyone!

Bruce, where is Micky wrong? He is correct, Biden did make a racial slur against Indians, he did support the partitioning of Iraq which would have been disastrous and he is a Washington insider. What is your beef? You cannot change Biden's bio just to suit the Hope and Change candidate. I do think the dem marketing people should change the team phrase though---"change" just isn't going to work anymore.

Oh Bruce are you still on the Sunni/Shiite thing? I mean really, let's be substantive. The McCain surge worked in Iraq to the point where we can now realistically talk about getting our troops out. Had we pulled out when Obama wanted us to, we would have left Iraq in chaos, and suffered a humiliating defeat. Under Biden's plan, the country would have been reduced to an eventual civil war. Come now, you must admit to the facts if you want to be taken seriously.

Kay, take your foot out of your mouth if necessary,
but explain to me the "racial slur". Can you do that for me
please?

Also if it is not too much trouble, and by the way both you
and Mickey have it wrong about partititioning.
Biden suggested a weak federal government with 3
states in order to promote stability and sharing of oil
revenue.

It boggles my mind how both you be so loud and
ignorant about this? But if your model of well-
informed is John McCain that explains a lot.

Are you kidding me ... a major American Presidential
candidate goes to Iraq to show his leadership ability,
and when he is trying to say something Presidential
has to be corrected by Joe Leiberman, a Democrat,
who explained the differencee between Sunni and
Shia ... I'll bet you want to forget that!

If the Republicans feel they have to grasp at
straws to change the issue away from McCain's
large "dodder" factor as a major issue I'm sure
they will not hesitate to try to make something
out of Biden's non-attribution of Neil Kinnock's
speech that he used. So what? I don't give
a damn at the time, or now.

Kay, I think the Indian's would be proud to
be business owners, Dunkin' Donuts, or 7/11 or whatever.
How is that racist, except maybe what you said?

It is just a fact that Mexicans in California do a lot of
yard work, Korean's run a lot of liquor stores, and
Indians run 7/11's ... it is simply not racism to make
an silly comment about it, it is just a silly comment.

That is why it didn't go anywhere at the time, and
it will not go anywhere now. What is the big deal
is that Republicans are seeming so rude and stupid
as to keep digging fluff like this up and throwing it
in the air and saying - LOOK!

Who cares ... I never knew so many Republicans were
so sensitive the Indian's feelings. That's nice of you
all.

The only surge McCain ever had was the Viagra surge.
The surge is being lamely credited to McCain by Bush/Cheney
in hopes of giving the old guy some credit and support.

I don't need to delete any post of yours Kay, I just do not
feel like typing the same things over and over since you
keep mentioning them in different articles like they are
new or you have not been answered.

It's a waste of time and when you do it in my articles

So now stereotyping is racism ...
and the 63 year old Biden is more curmudgeonly than the 72 year old McCain.
It is no surprise that Republicans cannot tell the difference between Sunni and Shia then.
Why can't Republicans seem to come up with a candidate that can talk without someone telling him what to say?

As an observation, the McCain camp responded exactly as expected upon the announcement of Biden as the VP choice. I'm sure they had pre-prepared suitable comments for all of the potential choices just so their digs would be handy for the eventual announcement.

And I'm sure the Obama campaign has already thought through responses to all the expected attacks, which really shouldn't be too hard because the McCain campaign has been quite predictable (not McCain himself, however, since he seems to gets confused occasionally).

Meanwhile the American people wonder whether they have been forgotten.

David, do you want to take up your friend Bruce's positon? Or will you simply echo his idiot "Viagra" and "doddering" remarks?

I will submit to you that Obama and his "guess who will be my VP text game", has resulted in the American people being forgotten. Obama needs to learn that not everything has to be a big "media" event.
