The jobs report at the end of February indicated a net loss of jobs for the US economy, but one area of employment growth, government, had an increase of 22,000 jobs. The New York Times article (link below) makes the point that conservative President George Bush has overseen a substantial increase in the growth of Federal employment. Perhaps this is really meant by "compassionate conservatism"; come and work for the government, but we are certainly not getting a smaller, more efficient government.
The first link below will take you to a job search site that lists a total of over 68,000 local, state and Federal jobs that are available. The second link takes you to a Newsweek article that deals with the same subject and tells some interesting stories about government employment, including the fact that some jobs come with a "sign up bonus" of up to $5,000.

Another reason, I feel, that gov't workforce is larger than any other is because most of it can't be outsourced to India or China! Since Reagan, we've seen law after law that protects people gettin thrown out so the Corporation can make more money.....too bad we are still too stuck at pointing our fingers at the little guy--who's working the toll booth, fixing potholes, checking that the water is fit to drink....
