(The story of George Bush and Dick Cheney)
Once upon a time, we had two con artists. Neither was good. In fact, to those who knew them, turning your back was a mistake. They were liars. They were cheaters. They stole. They connived. They conned their way through life, and over time, they got the amazing impression they could do anything and get away with it.
Then they did...and the damage caused was so incredible, so unbelievable, and so unspeakable, that people would rather forget their existence, or lie to themselves that these characters did any harm at all.
There was plenty of blame to go around. The gang they traveled with had so many willing scapegoats - willing as to ambition to make friends of the powerful no matter what - that when it came time to owning up to one's lack of credentials, lack of morals, lack of intellect, lack of - well anything that would have earned them their positions of trust - they took on the appearance of innocence.
One day, though, the shit hit the fan with a vengeance. The eyes of an entire planet were focused on them, on what they did, and they knew they couldn't get away with it any longer.
Of course, to them, this offered an opportunity to show their staunch attitude under fire, and they denied their own existence.
They just faded away...and when the smoke cleared, and they couldn't be found, or charged, or tried, or convicted of high crimes against humanity, against the United States, against the planet, the world let loose with a sigh of relief.
You see, for them to have gotten away with it for so long, meant they had to have a following. Thus in America, you don't have to be a rocket scientist, to apply for the job of a rocket scientist. You can be a fake. This means, your following are composed of a lot of fakes. A lot of wannabes. The type who don't merit much more consideration than that offered by a psychiatrist.
Isn't America wonderful?
Oddly enough, this brings to mind bombers. You give an order to a bomber, then he or she bombs away. They're thirty thousand feet up, they don't see who they're killing, and they're free to do so because they just followed orders. Isn't it great to be a bomber?
Strangely, too, this also brings to mind a sociopath. You can get away with as much harm as possible, as long as you appear innocent. Say, aren't these the characteristics of a remorseless politician?
By golly, it is! Don't worry, though, this is America. Even if these characters were both voted into the highest offices of the land, twice, we don't allow that sort of baloney here!
