To the no-life 'flaggers' of recipes:
I hope this clears up some of the controversy for those who go around flagging recipes and think just because it's not "original", that we are "stealing" and we have no right to post them. As I thought, many sites want us to share here.....
These are 'permissions', and also a direct email;
From 4 sites:
Please feel free to share list recipes with others, so long as you include the list and poster as a part of the source. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/clipping-cooking-archive
Please feel free to share list recipes with others, so long as you include the list and poster as a part of the source. recipe-riot@cooking-lists.com
From General Mills:
Hi Jeff, Do I/we have permission, are we allowed to post your recipes on a social website to share with others? Robyn
HI Robyn-Sorry for the delay. Yes, we'd love you to share our recipes on your social web site. Please if possible link them back to our Web sites so people can enjoy the fresh new content we're posting. THANKS-JEFF

One more:
Hi Robyn,
Thanks so much for your email! It's great to hear from you.
We are excited about our new widget on all of the recipe, blog and article pages: ShareThis! ShareThis enables you to share the current recipe page with your friends through your Social Networking sites!
You are still able to do all the same things you previously could with the recipe in the same way (add to your recipe box, email, customize, add to your shopping list) this is just a new widget that will enable you to share your favorite Allrecipes recipe with your friends in a new way!
Please let us know if you have any questions about ShareThis.
Happy cooking (and sharing)!
Candice
And I'm sure there are many more site that don't consider it "stealing"....So all you posters of wonderful recipes.....POST AWAY!!!!!!! We're hungry!!!!

how can someone flag a recipe? weird
some members here think it's "stealing" if you didn't make it up yourself, and flag you for violation of gather TOS.....:)
I didn't post my recipe for fresh strawberry pie (even though I had a photo of the one I made) because it turns out whoever gave me the recipe got it off a box of Jello or from a magazine, and I Googled it and found it on the Jello website. Maybe I should have posted it, I've never been flagged before. ;op
Sorry you are getting flagged. I have never ben flagged. But I have alway shared my own recipes I shared created.
i think i was only flagged a couple of times....
I am sorry you were flagged at all.
You'd think they would want you to help advertise (WOM) their products so why would they be upset if you share them?
oh jeez i thought they said those were okay as long as you typed up why you are sharing it or what your thoughts are on it
The flaggers are in abundance again, are they?
Due to the fact that adding or leaving out ONE ingredient changes a recipe. Very few are actual copyrighted recipes. Leave the brand names off is all. I post everything and anything, what makes it mine is how I add or substract from the original.
I had no idea people were flagging things like crazy - that's crazy!
On a different note - the point system here was supposed to be in favor of original content. I don't know how other site's recipes figure in that or if the possible lack of points would effect how many of them you post. I hope it works out for you.
Excellent post!!! That will give them something to think about!
Woo hoo! Great info.!
Love it! But you're spoiling someone's fun...
;)
Low raters dont tell you who they are, so they cant hurt you, they just have no life.
If you're using recipes where you have permission, just list that on each one. If you're using recipes passed on by relatives, put that on your post. Then, if Gather keeps getting bogus flags, the ones doing them will be the ones Gather goes after.
I like this post. I want to be able to go vegan but I just don't know how to cook it... I am looking for easy but delicious recipes.
does the flagger not understand recipes are meant to be shared? thanks for posting! :)
Robyn, that's good information. I've been teaching cooking and writing recipes for years and one thing I've learned to stress to students is the importance of documenting sources. It's done in journalism, academics, medicine...just about everywhere the author seeks credibility. The same holds true for recipes and cooking.
If you write something orginal and cite the sources, or lack of source information, you are being honest with regard to your material. Ingredients cannot be copyrighted but the written instructions can be copyrighted and frequently are so you must write your own instructions to avoid problems with copyright holders.
aha!!!~ so much for the flag happy~
Thanks for posting to GutterGirls~
I think someone doesn't have a life.. .and just likes to irritate you robyn. It's sad. I love ya though!!
No one is the original owner of recipes. They get passed down from one generation to another. Plus everyone modifies their recipes and makes them their own. Nothing wrong with posting them here.
Flagging recipes !! OMG !
Unless that person is a baker/chef who works at a particular establishment where they regularly create original recipes, it's really hard to "copyright" a recipe.
I read cookbooks for inspiration but almost never (say, once every couple of years) do I print off a recipe and follow it exactly. I cook what I have on hand; reading cookbooks mostly influences my grocery list but not necessarily how I cook it.
good deal, keep 'em coming Robyn:) I love trying new recipes, and sometimes it is something that I have all the ingredients for....it makes for a nice change to try something new, and find it right here instead of going to search for something:)
Technically you cannot flag/report anything on Gather for copyright/"fair use" infringement. HOWEVER, members that post content copied from other sources (even if the copying is allowed) CAN be reported to Gather for violating Gather's new 'original content' policy. This reporting should be accomplished via a Member Support form.
Hmmm, is Gather going to be that strict as to ban recipes if they are copied and credited? I understand original content, but one can develop a cookbook with recipes from other people and it is still considered "Original," by the publishers as long as there is permission. I would guess that applies to short story anthologies and such.
This is purely speculation as I do not copy and paste.
the Member Support form must be getting plenty of use then from 'those' members who are out to cause trouble and have no life of their own......."Original"???? David hit it on the head....
I wasn't aware that Gather had recipe police. Why am I reminded of Gomer Pyle yelling "Citizen's arrest!!"? Lots of recipes come from the copycat site, which, by virtue of its name, encourages copying.
Many recipes start from a given source (Betty Crocker, BHG, e.g.) and ingredients substituted, eliminated and/or increased/reduced. When a recipe is changed, it is no longer the original copyrighted property. I have recipes that I experiment with depending on what ingredients are on hand. I don't think posting those recipes is a copyright violation.
Thanks for posting to Cook it up Big!
Robyn, I made my opinion known in a reply to Kevin. I think the whole thing is a, "Tempest in a tea pot."
yeah, me too David.......
They must not cook, LOL. I've saved a lot of good recipes from here.
Honey it takes all kinds of people. I have no clue why they even bother to flag and be mean. You are only sharing it, not claim or earning anything from it.
That was mean. haha Oh well.
"Respect all Copyright and Fair Use laws when posting any content on Gather. This means you can only upload content you created or that you have the written rights to use". ONLY CONTENT YOU CREATED OR HAVE WRITTEN RIGHTS TO USE"....that says to me we CAN indeed post a recipe that is NOT our ORIGINAL , as long as we have written permission, which i DO, in the emails i posted in my post above.....so Gather......which the heck is it???????????????
Amen!
That's how you make content like that original (and personal).
I did have a problem on here with All Recipes, they said their recipes were so "unique" and just now invented they only wanted me to share one or two on this site and then just make a summary of the recipe from their site and provide a link to them for people to find the rest of it.
I just stopped altogether with the recipe stuff.
But looks like Peter up above gives another way to share recipes on here. I would hate for anyone to see me making my peanut butter candy.....but that would be a unique way to share recipes, like have someone make a video of you while you are preparing it, then upload the video along with the written instructions. This is way too much for me to do on the recipe line.
