In Hubby's family, this is known as Nannie's Crumby Pie because of the crumb topping. We made 6 of these between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
French Apple Pie
6 cups sliced apples
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon or nutmeg
2 Tbsp flour
Topping:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed gently
1 cup flour, sifted
Line 9" pie pan with pastry. Mix apples, sugar, cinnamon (or nutmeg) and 2 T. flour. Put in pie shell (if apples are not juicy, add a little water).
Creme butter and brown sugar, then work in 1 cup flour to make crumbs. Sprinkle crumbs over apples. Bake in 450 oven for 15 minutes. Reduce oven to 350, bake 30 minutes. If pie browns too quickly, cover with foil for last few minutes.
When we took 3 pies to Mom's for Christmas, we were almost attacked before we got in the door. 2 family members from out of town came and took the pies from us and tried to hide the pies for themselves.
