I want to announce an exciting event I have coming up in Houston this month at Murder By The Book - one of the hippest book stores around.
What: From Mothering to Madness: Houston's Murder By The Book hosts an informative panel discussion examining women and madness from fiction and the front-pages. Attendees can expect an interesting afternoon as psychiatric expert Dr. Debra Osterman and novelist Karen Harrington discuss incidents of women and madness in both the media and fiction.
When: Saturday, August 16, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Where: Murder by the Book is located at 2342 Bissonnet, Houston, TX 77005.
Who: Dr. Debra Osterman was a staff psychiatrist for the Harris County Jail, who treated Andrea Yates 12 days after the June 2001 drowning deaths of her children.
And you know me. I'm Karen Harrington, the author of Janeology, a novel that centers on the aftermath of one Texas mother who murdered her own child.
Acclaimed novelist Rosemary Poole-Carter, whose recent release Women of Magdalene, explores the mistreatment, misogyny and racism of patients at a women's mental asylum just after the Civil War, will be moderating this panel and taking your questions.
Ms. Poole-Carter and I will also read from our works and discuss how history, recent and past, influenced the ideas behind their works. Both of us will be signing our books as well.
