I came from a family with a Mom and Dad who had both been divorced before they married each other, and though my parents remained together they were never all that happy(that I could see.) I was encouraged to not get married but instead, try living together, that way if it didn't work out I could always get out of it. Both of my older brothers are divorced, one for the third time, the other just turned 42 and jus finally became a Dad with wife #2. My younger sister lived with her now husband for 9 years before they got married, the proposal came right after Mark)Jenny's Husband) went into remission from Prostate Cancer. So what happened to me? Like the main character in the book, "The Best Day of Someone Else's Life," I still wanted my own BDOYL(The Best Day of Your Life,) and I still believe in things like Love At First Sight, True Love, and finding your Soul Mate. And I did not want to get married, just to turn around and get divorced after finding out my husband was not the man I thought he was.
While I really enjoyed the humor in Kerry Reich's book, it was a bit painful to read as it led me for a walk down Before-I-Was-Married Lane, when I too was lonely, not happy to be single, and the pickin's were slim. Kevin(called Vi) had a lot more fun then I ever did, but in the end when she finally found Mister Right, she had decided from attending too many Weddings that the dream of the BDOYL was a cruel trick and decided she did not need a ceremony or to legal her union, as Weddings had become as jaded and commercialized as Valentine's Day. Ok, she has a point, but still, the ending was too similar to Four Weddings and a Funeral for me. I'm a sucker for the Happily Ever After story which includes a wedding instead of shacking up. I need CLOSURE!
I think the author Kerry Reichs has a great future, her quirky writing style is hilarious and relatable, and I enoyed reading it during the 6 hour car ride to Dallas a few weekends ago, with my Prince Charming and husband of 15 years come June 26th......whom I met through writing letters! You know, paper, pens, postage stamps? From the moment I read his second letter to me, I got the warm fuzzies all over and I KNEW he was the one. After 5 months of writting letters, I finally met him face to face and the next day he proposed! And some people said it would never last!
