Our flight to Hawaii leaves in 4 hours. I am all placked and killing time. The flight is about 9 hours long and I have spent the past week trying to think of things to do that will keep me and my husband occupied on the flight there and back. I have a hard time sitting still, I rarely sit through an entire movie because I get bored and start thinking of things that need to be done. AND! I cannot sleep on a plane.
Here is what I came up with:
iPod (duh!) and I got some great Sony noise cancelling headphones!
Card games - In searching for card games I found monopoly and scrabble in a card form. I have no idea how it works or how to play but I figure we can figure it out!
Sudoku book (I know, my nerd is showing)
Books 3 and 4 of the Sookie Stackhouse series - vampires are so cool!
Hello Kitty coloring book and a awesome new box of Crayola 64 crayons! No, we aren't taking our kids with us to Hawaii. I just love to color. Everyone I work with made fun of me for this but I think coloring is therapeutic. My husband likes to color too.
ISpy Book - Again, a kids book but entertaining
101 Things to do On The Big Island magazine - We have looked through it a little but I thought I could actually read it and plan some things to do while we are there.
Notebook and a pen - One time my husband and I were flying to Michigan for his grandmother's funeral. I pulled out a pen and paper and he took it and started a story. After a paragraph he handed it to me, I read his story and then continued it. We went back and forth the whole flight. It was really cute and fun and I still have it.
Any other last minute things you can think of that I can throw in my bag to keep us entertained on the flight there or home??

I would also take some kind of art project. There is knitting, crocheting and stuff you can do.
Sleep.
The plane should have movies that it will show since it's 9 hours. I went somewhere and they had tv's in the seats. Maybe your plane will have them too.
You can also download great stories on iTunes from NPR. The show that I love is called "This American Life" and it is an hour long program with three stories about unique peoples' lives. Very well done, very engaging. A great way to pass the time and feel like you come away from it enriched. You can get these shows free, which is even better!
I also brought along travel books, to help me get psyched for the place I was going to.
I love your idea about the notebook and creating a story. What fun!
Have a wonderful flight, and don't forget to get up and walk up & down the aisles every couple of hours. That is a MUST on such a long flight!
Oh, and drink lots and lots of water. I always buy a big bottle after I clear Security and sip it throughout the flight. Long flights really dry you out, and that makes you feel tired and icky upon arrival.
