Kyleigh's Story - Locking the Door

If it's the kind with the little hole on the otherside of the door....a coat hanger works to pop the lock. We also had a small key that fit inside to unlock the doors, just in case.

There has to be something safety wise that will help. I'm just not sure of what it is besides changing the locks to the ones that Janet recommended.

Try having your 2 year old figure out how to unlock the front door, and get onto the front porch.

You could change out the door knobs pretty cheap to either non-locking kind, or the type Jax mentioned, where you use something long and thin to pop the lock. That way, if she does lock it, it can be unlocked.

You can get round door knob covers which prevent young kids from opening doors, but they usually have a hole in the end, so I don't think they'd cover the locking mechanism.

I would change the door knobs!

yikes, i wouldnt have her try and unlock the front door to get out to the porch. shes still too young for that.

I would definitely change the knobs! That definitely sounds scary... don't want to wait until something bad truly happens before changing the lock/knob!

Every parent should make certain that there are no locks that can't be opened from the outside. This applies to closets and other rooms as well, not just bathrooms.

Could you place something in the door or in front of the door so she can'r close it while you are sleeping?

My oldest son was bad about locks. He was smart as a wipe and figured them out pretty quick.

Change the knobs

THE BATHROOM DOOR LOCK USUALLY HAS A HOLE ON THE OUTSIDE KNOB THAT YOU CAN PUT A TINY FLAT BLADED SCREW DRIVER IN AND UNLOCK THE DOOR..; I posted some pictures of a flip lock that we have on our bedroom door to keep people we don't want in the room.. It only cost about $2.00, at home depot of most any hardware store. check out the pictures. Doesn't look like much but it works good. You take the knob that has the lock on it off, put one on that doesn't have a lock on it. put the flip lock up high enough the who you don't want locking it can reach until she get much taller.

When my daughter was a toddler I lived in an apartment where I couldn't chage the lock. I ended up sticking paper or cotten in the hole in the door frame so the lock wouldn't engage. I don't know what that part is called. Not a great long term solution but it worked until we were able to do better
