The Bully

Now, some would say.. (Glen), that the Blue Jay is the bully of the animal world.

And.. I have witnessed that to be true.  They always seem to be pushing the other birds around, not to mention cats, dogs, people, etc....

But, today I have captured real footage (pictures), that suggests that there may be another bully lurking in the shadows.   Yes, that's right, a bully more fierce, more determined....

Notice the innocent Blue Jay as he searches for food...  lol

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Minding his own business... 

When all of a sudden he feels something hit his head.

 

 

 

 

 

Well.. what do you know.. 

This squirrel is scaling the tree stump, all the while shooting spit balls at the Blue Jay.

Warning him to keep away from from the bird food.

 

 

 

 

Sure, it may look like he's just innocently eating...  But don't let this cute little face fool you.   He's concealing a high powered spit ball shooter in his scrawny little paws. 

 

 

Just when I thought he was done...

I caught him reloading...

Just look at him.. so sly, maneuvering with such skill.

Yes, this is a bully of the fury kind. 

 

 I don't know...  If I hadn't seen it with my own two eyes.. I would have never believed it.

I got bullied by a Blue Jay once. I was just walking through the woods minding my own business, and this dive bomber comes shooting at me from out of the trees. There must have been a nest nearby because she wanted me out of there.

Nice photo's and essay. I hate squirrels. They are so mean and they will tear up your garden just for the sake of doing it.

Funny story for you....I have a dog that is half Australian Sheppard and half Miniature Collie. Even though our yard is fenced, we have to chain her when she is outside as she will find a way to escape the yard......including using her bony head to bust a wooden fence. There was a squirrel that she would love to chase but the squirrel knew exactly how far the chain would reach and sit just outside that range. We also witnessed the squirrel throwing pine cones at her just to get her stirred up. Suddenly the squirrel disappeared. We thought maybe it had gotten hit. About three months later we heard our dog barking like crazy and when we looked out, here was that squirrel..........teaching her babies to tease our dog!

Loved the photo essay! By the way, mockingbirds will give blue jays a run for the money in the meanness department! LOL!

I know people who are like those squirrels and the ones Elaine describes.
Not that I have any sympathy for the family Corvine. I do my best to prevent the magpies from preying on my garden birds.
We have squirrels who try to raid our bird feeder. Bad squirrels!
This was a great article to read and chuckle over, but it reminds me that nature is 'red in tooth and claw'.
