One of the Dangers in Using Sarcasm with Your Tween

So ... funny story ...

I use sarcasm a lot at home with my 12 year-old son ... and what's the best way to respond to sarcasm?  More sarcasm!  Is it a dysfunctional and twisted form of familial communication?  Probably ... but we make it work for us.  Anyway, earlier today I asked him to please put NyQuil on my shopping list.  He said, "Mom, you're a druggie" to which I responded, "What's the problem?  It takes Mommy's pain away".  He giggled and almost left the room, but then he reminded me that he needed batteries, so I told him to add them to the list and be very clear what kind he needs.  After that I lost all focus on that shopping list.  Apparently, my daughter (seeing that her older brother added an item to the list that he felt he needed) had come in and added her own 'need' to the list.  As I was going to the fridge to make dinner, I caught a glimpse of my updated 'Grocery List' and I laughed my butt off for more than a few minutes.  Here is what I read:

I'm just glad I caught it before my friends saw it (they dropped by after dinner) ... or they might have wondered just what the heck goes on in my house when visitors aren't around!

Erin, life is like that, I sometimes look at my shopping list I write myself, and that first item is there, in my handwriting, I guess I should say meds, but I love that your daughter added what she wanted too, so cute,

My husband used to think it was funny to write "one human head" on my grocery list. It made me smile the first 2 or 3 times, but after the 10th time I finally forbid him to do it anymore.

My son was such a finicky eater, I didn't even make a list. I gave him the shopping cart, and took myself off for a mocha. When he appeared at the line, I just wrote the check. He didn't really have a sweet tooth, less than mine, so it worked pretty well.

We live in a country where there are Drugs for everything. You hurt there is a drug for every hurt. Why should we be supprised to see People turn to drugs when life is not just what we want. Turn on the TV and how many drugs are there.

This is all true, John, but I think you need a chill pill.

Cute story, Erin. My son's just 10, so he hasn't reached the biting sarcasm stage yet. Sometimes in the past he has felt sorry for himself (when he isn't allowed some extravagance or something) and that does get pretty tiresome. So I guess to sort of jolly him out of it, or at least make him laugh at the ridiculousness of it, I said, "That's right, can't stand ya, rotten kid!" He invariably laughed and said, "Can't stand ya, rotten Mom!" and stopped moping around about whatever it was. I never thought about it again till he blurted out in a store about a month later, "Can't stand ya, rotten Mom!" Never fails to get a reaction, so he tries it now and then in public places.

Funny! Sarcasm is in our home as well. While it worked/works with my teens, my 11 yo learning disabled child does not catch on. I am having to rethink thinking.
